What would you do for a slip for this pattern (3rd from left) in a show-thru drapey, floral printed rayon? A regular straight cut slip or one with a varied length like the skirt and if so, just down to the top of the flounce? The fabric has a yellow background and small blue and purple flowers. What color do you think the slip should be since it might show some? McCalls 4308 (http://cgi.ebay.com/McCalls-4308-CLASSIC-M-MP-Bias-Skirts-8-14_W0QQitemZ8230985661QQcategoryZ11801QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) I purchased this pattern 2/04 and now it's OOP Edited to add: I started trimming out the pattern tonight and find that they include directions for a lining the same as the skirt less the flounce. I'll have to find a fabric to match and think I'll do it that way. |

If you aren't going to line it...flesh colored slip down to the flounce.

Thanks for the replies. I've looked in my stash and have a flesh-colored crepey drapey piece which I've decided I don't like for the outside of any other garment and that I'm going to try as a lining. I thought I might "face" the flounce with the floral rayon, so when the inside of the back flounce shows it won't look like the inside. What do y'all think about that? |

I'd line it instead of using a slip though. If your lining is thin enough it won't effect the weight of the skirt that much I think that a slip will be a big bother and probably won't move with the skirt, might be distracting. As for color, the flesh is nice but I'd probably use a coordinating solid yellow. Something like a poly china silk wouldn't add anything to the weight of the dress and yet it would work well as a lining. I agree with your idea about the flounce.

paroper, I'm now thinking that crepe fabric I got out is too heavy for the lightweight rayon. I have a silk linen-look in the same yellow-green range for a matching top, but I will look for a different lining like the poly china silk. I haven't used such before. I don't have enough of any other lining fabric in my stash. Another question - is it imperative that I cut the lining on the bias as well? I was going to attach the lining at the waist, but still add an interfaced facing. The one thing about the faced flounce is that there might be a little show-thru of the floral print, so if I find a lightweight enough lining I could add that in between. Decisions, decisions. I just love the fabric and have just enough, so I don't want to mess it up. fabric (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8256307145&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2F%2Fsearch%2 Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D8256307145%26 fvi%3D1) |

Yes it needs to be cut on the bias and the bias needs to be going the same direction. If you do not, you will loose the flow of the skirt which is what is "special" about the skirt...and if you cut it on the bias and turn it around where the bias is opposite each other, it will do some pretty strange things. China silk is very light weight. It is what we use for drill team flags and is a common lining fabric. If there is a lot of green in the fabric, you might want to line with the green. Why not take the fabric (or a good size sample with you to the store?) pam

I will check my local JoAnns and Walmart, but I would have to plan a day trip to any other fabric store. Is this the china silk I should be looking for? ebay china silk (http://cgi.ebay.com/China-Silk-Habotai-Fabric-LIGHT-LEAF-GREEN-2-5-Yards_W0QQitemZ6260420119QQcategoryZ29820QQcmdZVie wItem) I know it's not poly, but should I be looking for habotai in the description? You're a great help paroper, thanks! MelanieO |

Just ask for China silk. It is very common. I imagine the other may be a brand, not sure.
