Has anyone run across the newer patterns that require you to make a funny stepped cut when you lengthen the pattern near the waist ? In the past they used to recommend a straight cut accross the pattern, this new method seems to end up with the same results, but the patterns call for a strange cut-out in the center of the pattern as you lengthen it. I just can't see the advantage of doing this.

What brand is the pattern? I haven't noticed it but I don't often lengthen the waist.

it's a McCall's pattern, specifically the M4600. However I've seen it a lot on some other new patterns I've purchased lately. Instead of a straight cutting line _ _ _ _ _ They show that you should cut it like this _ _ _------_ _ _ when you cut to lengthen. Hope that makes sense.

On some patterns there are two lines for adjustment to petite. The are usually at the end, but somtimes they are at the top with arrows pointing upward. That top line may actually a new type of fold line to make the pattern petite. You just fold from the bottom line to the top for a standard petite measurment. Do you think?

Here's a picture I scanned from the instructions showing how they want you to cut it to lengthen it. Patten Lengthening (http://hometown.aol.com/juneharlow/pattern.html) After giving this a lot of thought, I think I know why they do this. In the past the "old way" of cutting straight across and taping in a piece always came up with wrinkles in the pattern. I think this new way of cutting the pattern is a way to reduce the wrinkles when you paste it back together. Does that make sense ? June ~

Oh, that isn't new at all. See the tape measure on the sides? You cut the pattern like that and then you use the tape measure to measure the change of the pattern. If you want to lengthen 1/2 inch you just put the top of the pattern at 1/2 inch on both sides. It is a short cut. If you want to shorten, you use the tape measure to determine how much you have shortened.
