I feel quite silly :whacky: asking this question. I received a free pattern for foundation piecing so while I was at the store yesterday, I thought I would purchase some freezer paper. Does it matter what kind of freezer paper you use? The store only had the new Press N Seal kind. Is this what I want or are there other kinds to use? Thank you for any response.

Yes there is a difference. Press & Seal is see-through plastic with one side that is sticky00. People sometimes use it to do machine quilting after the quilt top is put together.

When people refer to "Freezer paper" generally they mean the type that is paper on one side and has a coating (plastic or wax) on the other side. It is actually used in butcher shops to wrap meat. But in quilting, people use it mainly for appliqué quilting. Usually they draw designs on the paper side and cut them out. Then they place the design with the wax or plastic coating down on the fabric and lightly iron it on. Then they cut out the design in fabric.

I have never done foundation piecing but you would probably be able to use the white freezer paper for it. But I believe you could use just regular paper as well. Maybe someone else will be along who has actually done foundation piecing and can give specific advice.

Thank you HeyJudee

 This is exactly the information I was seeking. I guess I'll have to try the grocer next time. I'm sure they will have a much better selection of products from which to choose.

I've been doing a lot of foundation piecing lately. I don't use freezer paper - I've opted for tracing paper. The reason is it's easier to see through to trace the pattern, and it tears easily. If you can't find freezer paper, tracing paper might be something to consider.

My decision is maybe and that's final!

Wal-Mart carries the freezer paper and so do most grocery stores. A small box of freezer paper goes along way.

Not in Canada they don't....the only place I can find freezer paper is at a local quilting store approx. 20 min. from my house. And I am the one who has to supply my sister, niece, aunts and any of their friends who live in Southern Qué as they can't find it anywhere down there. I thought it would be something available in grocery stores but I guess plastic freezer bags are used more than the paper.

Just a thought...

maybe you Canadian ladies who have a difficult time finding freezer paper could purchase some from your local butcher...especially if you do business with them anyway. They buy in large quantities.

How funny plrlegal,
That's where I was and could not find it. My choices were freezer bags or the glad press and seal and all I could see was that press n seal stuff sealed to the soleplate of my iron.

Vnes, I've seen foundation piecing done once on a tv show and it looked so easy. Perhaps I'll need to purchase a beginners book. I do have rolls of pattern tracing paper I ordered from Nancy's Notions. Perhaps it will work just as well.

Thank you everyone for the responses.

Tara the freezer paper at my Wal-Marts is not in the section with wax paper, etc., it's in the area where they have canning jars, etc. Duh? The Press n Seal is not for foundation piecing. The only thing I know it's been used for in quilting is to draw quilting designs on and pin to the quilt top for actualy quilting. By the way, are you talking about paper piecing or foundation piecing? They are two different processes.

Tara, have you tried googling for foundation piecing. I know I've come across a few sites that have instructions on how to do it. Give it a try.

Thank you Heyjudee,

I never thought to do a google search. I went to the first link you listed....great! Foundation piecing is something I think I would like to try. I confess that I love books and I don't know of which I have more, books or fabric. Thanks again.
