I shouldnt have been sewing last night. Work had taken it out of me and I was hoping to get a few minutes of sewing in to calm and straighten thoughts but.....

I was making a pair of pants for my dughter out of a pair of (brand spanking new) dockers my husband had gotten ink all over the pocket and wouldnt wear anymore. so I get it all cut out and sew it all together and notice something while putting the elastic in, two of the seams are inside out!!! So I carefully rip them out and resew them then redo to elatic. they are cute but actually wont fit my daughter...she has really long legs (not sure how I have a 28" inseam and I am 5'4") so they are a little bit of high waters. But I decided to make the little dress coat that goes with them and I get the pattern cut out just about all the way and UGH!!!! I dont have enough to make the second sleeve. So I use the rest of the left over pants and cut out sleeves and the collar...Sure hope it looks alright when I am done, but I quit after the pattern was cut and went to bed :bang:

I think you deserve an A+++ for effort  . Although I have thought about it, I never felt I had the skills to create something different from something already made. I on the other hand would have been trying everything I knew to try to get those ink stains out.

Trust me I did! I now have about 4 bottles of different stain removing gells. I tried diluting a little bleach and getting it out that way, but to no avail. Made me red hot  because I am always cleaning junk out of his pockets and the one time I let him do laundry this happens. I think the dryer cooked it in good, and he had only worn them twice they where $30+ bucks too much to ruin that fast.

Thanks

My husband once washed a pen with 4 SETS of BDU's (pants and shirts of his AF uniforms), dried it in. I managed to get it all out. I don't remember how, but I think I used some hair spray first and blotted all the stains first. Then used about 4 stain removers at the same time. (Rit also makes a GREAT stain remover, comes in a bottle). He didn't wash his uniforms after that....
(and yes he knows how to wash clothes...he's just an idiot sometimes).

Why not make the pants into capris if they are too short? My dd loves hers.

Stephi, I've learned the hard way if I'm tired, don't sew or try to do anything that actually requires thinking! I always goof something up if I'm tired. Take a look at what you've done when you are rested and you will figure out something to do with them for your daughter!

If I waited until I wasn't tired I'd never sew anything. :whacky:

Most nurses know that hair spray takes ink out of fabric as Chrys describes, (and Amaze or BioAd perspiration stains) but I have never had to use anything else after blotting the ink out. The regular wash takes the rest out. If you tried that and it didn't work I would wonder if dockers has some protective chemical of sorts in the fabric.

On the stain topic, I have many time washed a piece of red Moda batik fabric today with every known thing to keep the colour in or protect it from sticking to other fabrics. Finally running clear water, but the fabric is hardly the same colour I started with! I am certainly glad I decided to prewash.

I have some red Moda....mine has never run...how weird...(I'm a RED freak and have lots of reds in my stash.) The only red I have to be careful of is some red towels my sister got me, from Penneys. They have run for the past 8 yrs. No matter how I wash the things. Funny how fabric is....
I watched a Simply quilts one time where a woman had different samples of fabric. She wanted to see how they'd react to sun , water and soap/detergent...some of the samples stayed perfect, some ran, some faded so bad they were almost white. She had fabric from everywhere/everyone.
Some samples faded on one part, but not the rest of it. It was weird to see.
It just goes to show you, you can't trust fabric all the time, no matter who makes it....

I fuddled with the pants last night but I think I will just give them to one of my younger nieces. They are a vintage butterick pattern that only came in one size (I cut the pattern big but my duaghter has just sprouted) It looks like it is still going to be a real cute outfit. I had a brown plaid material to make the coat out of and it called for the occasional gather at the hips and in the back of the skirt but I made pleats instead. I just think they look nicer vs a gather especially with this material. I might add a row of flowers or leaf ribbon to give it more of a girly flare. Hadnt quite decided yet, but Iwill post a pic when done

Oh yes, hair spray is a good thing to have around..I have used it to remove ink quite a few times.
I thought the capri idea was a good one myself.
I have tried to learn that when I am getting frustrated and tired that it is totallly useless to continue any project--especially something I am sewing. I remember taking a reversible jumper apart 100 times because I just couldn't get it sew together correctly..finally put it down after muttering a few words I shall not repeat and really try not to say..picked it up the next morning and VOILA ...got it right on the first try..

I can relate to quitting when you are ahead. I just finished giving myself a huge goose egg and a cut in the middle of my forehead. I was getting really tired of sewing and I kept misplacing things, so I knew it was time to quit. Then I couldn't find a pattern piece, so I leaned over to look behind the serger table and cracked my head good into a spool of serger thread which was hanging on the wall mounted rack. I have this nice 1/2 circle cut and a big red egg on my forehead - won't I look cute at work tomorrow???

Stephi I thought about you this afternoon! I finished up making a skirt for my daughter and thought since I was in the mood I'd cut out the pj pants for her. Well cut them out, serged 2 seams together-so far so good-then serged the next one and you can guess what happened-wrong 2 pieces to serge together! :bang: So I ripped it out, reserged the darn pants and when I got to the contrasting yoke and it said put buttonholes in, I folded everything up and put it away for tonight! :nervous: No way was I attempting button holes after having to rip out seams already! LOL Maybe I'll finish the pants tomorrow.

Lynn,

I love the stork counter, how cute!! Yes its best to just quit while you are ahead.

I did put the button holes in the coat last night but came to the conclusion I really dont like the way it turned out at all. I just need to hem it up and then I am going to let me niece have it to play in. When I looked at it this morning I noticed the button holes are uneven, LOL. Oh well better luck next time. I did the button holes while in complete disbelief of being served a summons last night, LOL. My mother is sueing me for grand parents rights. Its a mess because she was very verbally and mentally abusive to me and I have only recently cut the ties since getting back into church and marrying my prince charming. She didnt take it well but I never thought she would do this. I told her she was more than welcome to come over and visit but My D was not going to her house anymore (long story short any time she went over there she got in trouble at school and home).

Stephi

Still in shock, but determined to stitch through it :bg:

Stephi,
I am so sorry to hear about that. We cut ties with my dh's parents a year and half ago. After trying to make peace with them for 13 years, we had had enough. It wasn't a good environment for our children. Good luck with that! Keep sewing - it's great for our mental health (well sometimes!)

Stephi I enjoyed reading your message. :whacky: I have those days too. Have you ever tried going to the door and opening it and just hollar. It makes you feel better I promise. Hang in there even if it's by a thread and keepa sewing. I find that my mistakes turn out to be blessings. Just imagine you can start your own line of clothing. :bluewink:

Thanks Everyone,

Im a roll with the punches kind of person (which drives my DH crazy, he thinks I should be bawling madd at them) and I find all of this sort of amusing. No I am not mental!!! My lawyer has been beaming up for this and I am sure we will win no problem (especially since the summons says grandparents rights are not recognized in VA) My friends have alway been there for me and they will be through this, my daughter loves her grand parents but I think she realizes they arent good people. Even at 4yo she came home upset because papa was going to the devil for something she saw him do. I still am not sure what it was but she hasnt been back since then.

I am glad I ran across this site, you guys are awesome!!

Oh Stephi--I'm so sorry you are having to go through this with the grandparents rights summons. Keep your chin up and hang in there. You guys will be just right and you cannnot go wrong being in church. It's helped me tremendously as well as my husband. We went through a rough Spring last year with some stress which took it's toll on our lives all together and we finally settled down long enough to catch our breath and get ourselves back in church and focused where we should be. It doesn't work for everyone but it did for us! Best of luck and you have my prayers!

Oh yeah---remember that sewing is great therapy (at least to me anyway!!) You can always tell when I am stressed b/c I sew ALOT more!!

LESTOIL, if you can find it, works fantastic on greasy or oily messes. I once got dried green crayon :whacky: out of my daughters school dress with a background of white, using Lestoil. Just a suggestion!
