I am searching for the pattern to make a dried bean and/or pop corn rooster. When I was a youngun, Mamma made one, now it is long, long gone and I want to make one. It was "mounted" on a piece of plywood covered in burlap and covered in varnish when all the beans, peas, etc were glued on and was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l!!!! I have searched :throw: and only get others looking for the same thing. I think maybe, the pattern was a mail order thingie out of a magazine. ANY help would be welcome--If you have one and can take a picture that would help, if you don't have the pattern. If you remember what magazine, I will try searching that way--THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANYTHING YOU FEEL IS USEFUL.

not laughing, smiling, 'cause we had one, too! Different kinds of dried beans, peas, etc.

Sorry I can't help you, but good luck.

I know what your talking about for sure. You can still buy them at some tourist places. Branson, Mo is one of those places. Couldn't you find a simple picture of what you want ( like from a coloring book or whatever ) enlarge it if need be & then go from there ? As you said they are just glued on & varnished when finished. All the ones I've seen are glued on wood. Really they are so simple to make once you know what design you want & the materials you want to use. I've seen them at arts & craft fest also. For special effects it's nice to use a variety of seed, beans, corn or whatever.Gives more color & dimension. I'll keep my eye out to find more info for you.

We made those in a craft class many years ago.. we had a master pattern copied and enlarged from a coloring book of farm animals.. He was crowing ...We all used different beans and peas.. the tail feathers were what was fun.. (all those different colors)... My son made one on cardboard when he was in Kindergarten..

I actually have the pictures my gma made when I was a girl. They are rather bug-eaten and I would like to make some new ones. Someone on another post suggested a few ideas for copying them but I haven't come up with a really good way to do it short of heading for kinkos because they are so big. Someone else from an old pattern site thought the old McCall's Needlework & Crafts mags might have the patterns. I haven't had a chance to get to the library yet to see. Any suggestions?

My mother and dad made a set for our house and my aunts house. I can't remember where they got the pattern. I would love to know if you find one and where you get it.

We went to the MT Dora antique fair this weekend & there was quite a few there. They were just patterns that were enlarged from coloring books or where ever & done on wood. All were done with different kinds of seeds on each picture. Like different beans, rice or whatever I suppose that were on hand or whatever suited that part of the animal best. Some were even painted on the seeds. I guess to make it more colorful. They are easy to make & a lot of fun. Kids love to make them.

I have a contact at an old pattern site that thinks it will probably be in old McCall's Needleowrk & Craft mags or Pack-O-Fun mags. Anyone have access to these, most likely in the '60s?

I was just going to say, coloring book pages enlarged might work. Good luck in the search.

Yes, Mary, I suggested that a while back.. Up in the thread earlier.. Sounds like the best way to me.. Or even get a picture of one and sketch it out to enlarge, if they cannot get to a copier..

mjh...I may be able to help. My mother always called me a pack rat....well I took some time this afternoon to go through a box of old magazines. I have a Best of McCalls Needlework & Crafts magazine (1975??) that has a "hardware rooster" but it is done in woods and metals and described as...

"hardware rooster, cut from plywood, is studded with a variety of tacks, nails, and thin wire. First shown in 1965, our rooster was originally "feathered" with seeds. He was so popular that we dressed him again - in metal"

In the instructions, there is a grid pattern of the rooster that you can use to enlarge. I could scan and send you the pages and at least you would have the pattern. Send me a pm with your email address if you would like me to scan it.

HeyJudee, you ROCK! Thanks so much for taking the time to peruse your old mags for the Rooster. Can't wait to start collecting my beans and get the glue ready. You have my undying gratitude and you are my crafting goddess heroine! May all your crafts be handmade happiness!
