I recently purchased for myself a Husqvarna Viking Scan 400 Sewing and Embroidery machine.
I now need thread which is very expensive.
Where do you all purchase your thread?
Have a Good Day!

All embroidery thread is expensive. You don't want to use cheap thread in your machine. I buy mine at my dealer....(or a dealer that sells RA)

At the top of one of these pages is a link for less expensive embroidery supplies...

www.threadart.com ???

Theres another one also...can't remember...just look at the top banners it's there somewhere...

found it... www.discountembroiderysupplies.com

for the info.
I am new to embroidery but I do have a Simplicity Serger. And I know from using it that only good thread will give you good results. Also the machine works better and last longer.

So...I plan to use only good embroidery thread. It is just getting that inital starter set of thread. All designs seem to take different colors. So it looks like one needs the max starter thread set they can afford.

I do search EBay. There you can buy Sulky, Madeira, and RA. It runs from $2.50 per spool on up.
Have a Good Day!
Brenda

Brenda,

Remember just because the design is in a certain color doesn't mean you have to use that color. If the flower is purple and all you have is red, try that. I have actually done a few where I liked my colors better than the design anyway. I am fairly new to embroidery myself and I buy a few spools at a time. I can explain away a few dollars a week but the $50+ to buy a set is too much at once. Plus the sets I have looked at have a lot of colors in them that I don't and probably won't ever use.

Try shoppers rule...you can make them an offer and if accepted costs a little cheaper than what i get at my dealer....i only use RA and they carry that brand.

for the info.

I have another concern that maybe you or anyone out there can help me understand.

The difference between using polyester or rayon thread for your embroidery designs?
Does it make a difference? Does it hurt your machine to use polyester thread when embroidering?

What are your opinions?
Have a Good Day!
Brenda

Brenda I know it won't hurt the machine...I will be surprised if someone comes on here and says it does....Polyester you can use bleach with....Rayon you cannot...so Poly would be better for babies clothing etc.....( Ihope I have this right and not reversed...I am forgetting things lately LOL )
I am sure if I have it wrong someone will correct me....everyone has their own preference....I myself think rayon is shinier and prettier but I do use Poly on dish towels etc.....so I have both....I would love to read all of what the others do so I will follow this thread closely.....I would like to know which is stronger ( not much breakage ) poly or rayon...I think poly but I am not sure.....looking fwd to reading this thread......hope a lot participate....:) Ria
PS how about metallics....I haven't used them much....

you're right poly is color fast and rayon is not...both are as strong you will sometimes find that you have problems with black thread breaking only because of the dye process involved with making it black.

But i find that RA thread is the best and i have very very few brakage with thiers vs other brands (just my opinion).

If you can afford it there is a wonderful site with a great form group for embridery....www.artisticthreadworks.com They have over 9,000 designs for members and the forum is a mixed group of hobbiest and business owners. it currently costs 19.95 every three months or 10.00 per month. (I dont own stock nor am i the owner just a member for over a year now)

I have learned so much from the forum and the owners have a monthly prize drawing for active members.

Actually rayon is colorfast it just won't stand up to bleaching. Being colorfast just means it won't run when wet.

I prefer Marathon thread. I started using it about 5 years ago and haven't been disappointed in it yet. The quality and price can't be beat.
http://www.marathonamerica.com/special.html if you use the code from the specials page I posted it is $1.55 for poly and $1.60 for rayon 1100 yrd mini cones. There is a minimum of $30 to get that price. They used to give free thread colorcharts with your first order so ask if they still do. I have all 377 colors of rayon and am working on collecting the poly set too.

I also have a great deal of marathon thread, very good thread and very reasonably priced.... I also bought the entire ARC poly thread collection last year..... I got it from www.melcomart.com very reasonably.... and I find I like it as well as the marathon.... Isacord, Robison Anton, and others are very nice threads... but tend to be a bit more expensive, and for me personally, I can't see the justification for the cost differential... marathon threads have a number of sites throughout the US and Canada... just do a google search for marathon threads.... usually, at least one of the sites will be having some kind of sale.... good luck... have fun!!
