Hi quilters...I usually hang out in the embroidery forum but I am a quilter also...I usually buy my Kaleidoscope patterned cut peices from Ebay....they are allready cut but I wonder just what the stack and smack method is and where do you purchase it to cut the fabric yourself...and is it difficult...I know it would be cheaper in the long run...I have purchsed Luminosity kaleidoscope and made a wall hanging and placemats for my daughter and they were absolutely gorgeous....thanks for any help.....Ria

PS> ..I cant seem to get my signature right on here....it show up with all the html codes on it......anyone tell me why? LOL.....I know some html since I hve my own website but I just cannot get it right on here....:

I have read somewhere how to prepare the fabric.. you have to find how the fabric repeats first and stack them on one another matching them perfectly in however many pieces you need.. I have not made one or worked on one but I have helped a friend line up her stack.. I do love the effect they create when made up..I think my friends was 18 inch repeats of the pattern..

I have heard of 'Stack and Slash' and 'Stack and Whack', but never of 'Stack and Smack' LOL.

I have started a 'Stack and Whack' quilt a few years ago, but didn't finish. It was a little confusing at first but fun.
You have to stack the pieces (6 if it's a hexagon pattern), insert a pin throu all layers at the exact same spot on the print, and cut, I think with a template. It helps if you use a folded mirror to stand on the fabric to find your best pattern, so you can see how the hexagon would look finished.

I'll try to find the instructions. (or better yet, if you can find the book 'Stack and Whack Quilts', used, on amazon.com , then get it.)

Thank you Leapfrog and thank you Advap...
LOL> ..it is stack and whack as you say....for some reason my brain wanted it to be stack and smack...ha ha ha ...no such thing...oh these are so beautiful they are worth the work but I am beginning to think that buying it all cut up at Ebay is the way to go...seems like you really need to be precise and I don't know if I would mess it up...if you get a chance view the Luminosity Kaleidoscope...it is so gorgeous...comes in many colors...This is the one I made for my daughter....

Ria, it's beautiful, and you're right, it's much easier to make them with precut pieces, than to try and cut 6 or eight pieces together that should be exactly the same. Also, $20 for the kit is really a good deal.

Ria, that kit is just lovely. I have used the magic stack'n'whack book. I used some rather garish fabric that I had bought (cheap) and didn't know what to do with it here is the fabric http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sewingskye/detail?.dir=9473&.dnm=e301.jpg&.src=ph
it turned into this top - it was so much fun sewing it 'cause every block was different =- I get bored making 12 of the same so this was a good exercise for me this is the queen sized quilt top I ended up with

Actually I just quilted this last Monday using vareigated thread from hell but that is another story
I didn't find it that hard to line up the fabric to cut out but the kit proces do sound very reasonable.
