God bless Levis. Life was so easy when all jeans were made in Levis style with the heavy duty gold top stitching thread.
Boy, were those the good old days.
Let me explain.
My darling daughter has size eight hips on a size one inseam. That means I cut off at least four inches from each and every pair of jeans we get for her. Recently, I've noticed that it's harder and harder to match up the thread. Nobody seems to use the old gold Levis thread anymore.
Old Navy jeans have a bluish white thread. Another brand had a yellowish thread. The ones I did this weekend had gray.

Does anyone know where I can buy jeans thread--or even plain old top stitching thread in multiple colors?

The jeans need to look cool--not home stitched. Sigh.

I have the same problem your daughter has regarding length of pants but have reached a wonderful stage in life where a bad hair day is unimportant. Coats makes a 'jean' thread in a mottled mid blue. I did buy some orange cotton on a big spool, name unknown, a number of years ago but stopped using it as it broke very quickly.
Does anyone really notice the hem thread? There are also so many mothers that don't sew and kids hem their own poorly. I would think they become tattered so quickly it wouldn't be noticed. I can see where side seams may be different. Personally, I try to match the denim colour vs the thread. Let me guess that your daughter is 12 or 13 years old!

A suggestion would be use Sulky or other rayon threads which come in a myriad of colours but tend to be shiney. I don't know how it would stitch through denim, however. Or perhaps you should use 2 types of thread to make the thread unnoticeable.
I don't know where you live to suggest a source, but would try a quilting or craft store as they tend to carry more different types of thread, though button hole thread should be available at a general purpose sewing shop.

Good luck - this too shall pass.

I too have given up and started using threads that best match the pants. This has been a problem forever. Even with a good variety of jean threads, it is hard to find the exact match. It is much easier to match the denium.

Sometimes, you can use two spools of lighter weight thread together in place of one thicker thread. If the colour is difficult to match, you may be able to use two different colours that will appear to blend...the trick is to find the appropriate colours that will give the effect you want.
Take care,

Try upholstery thread. It's slightly finer and may match up better.

I had some luck using tan thread for some jeans I hemmed for a friend. I think it was Coats and Clark Button and Craft, or something like that. Even though the thread on the jeans was more orangey, the tan still looked ok. I've also been eyeing the upholstery thread, but it doesn't come in that many colors. It's a personal thing, but I feel like the thread needs to be contrasting somehow, otherwise it looks odd to me. :)

So you have me looking at the jeans Im wearing today..ALl of my jeans are way long on me becuase I have a 28" inseam and Im 5'6" tall. I know weird huh. My hip bone up to my shoulder bone is the same length as my inseam, but you would never know because I wear heals all the time..no less that 2" !! I would just go with a dark blue or goldish, maybe get some dye and feed it through that to match it up.

Not sure I never really noticed the hem thread on any of my pants, infact the pants I have on today are two different color threads?!

Unfortunately, I've never had to cut off jeans for either of my children. Elizabeth is 15 and already 5'10" and still growing I think. Sarah is smaller in the waist but in the 98th percentile for height so she's OK with length. The problem I have had with her jeans is that they are ALWAYS too big in the waist and I've had to do some adjusting there but little toddler jeans are not anywhere made like big girl jeans. Sorry I cannot help!

There is a way of doing the hem, called a Euro hem, which uses the original edge, so you wouldn't have to rehem them. I'm not explaining myself well, take a look at the link. http://www.sewnews.com/resources/qa/qa0206c/
There's also a thread on the forum, search for european hem.

It's a little like taking a tuck in the pant from behind.

Julie - try looking into pants that have the tag saying "Adjustable waist". On the outside the pants look like normal everyday pants, but on on the inside are elastic tabs to bring in the waist area. My dd is 4T for tops and 3T for bottoms. If I buy an outfit I need to make sure the waist is adjustable or by the time she'll fit into the jeans she'll have grown out of the top!
Instead of getting my long legs she got my dh's long waist. The only thing she got from me was the gender (& my temperment  ).

Thank you all sooooo much.

Yes, the darling dear is 13. She's got size 9 hips, but the inseam length hasn't caught up with those curvy hips yet, which means.....OH NO! SHE'S INHERITED MY SHAPE (I knew I should have adopted and not brought such torture upon a teenage girl).
I will look at the online sources ya'll recommended to see what I can find.
I never thought about using two colors of thread, but that makes perfect sense. I'll give that a shot too.
I hemmed a pair with simple top stitching thread this weekend and that looked pretty good.
I saw the pintucked hem in Threads magazine and showed it to her. She rolled her eyes and told me "no way." (I thought it was quite clever myself.)

And, just to give you an update, I was at JoAnns today and Gutterman has a whole selection of jeans thread in different colors. I was looking for something else, and poof, there it was. Isn't that how it always works out?

I need to get to the fabric store more often!

I use Gutermann jeans thread #865. I think the jeans manufacturers must have their own custom colours but this matches the gold/yellow pretty well.

I need to get to the fabric store more often! I thought that too until I went yesterday to Fabricland for a yard of velcro and some 1" elastic and came out $78 poorer, they had their buy 1 get 1 free, or buy 1 get 2 free or buy 1 get 3 free. And who can pass up 'free'????

I took my hubbie with me last weekend to pick up a "few" things and he almost had a chest grabber!!! I think I only spent $70 but he wasnt at all prepared for anything more than like $10. He doesnt get the consept of "per yard" and I found some really cute yellow fabric (on sale) that I can mess around with my baby patterns with.

HEHEHEHEHE!!

Wheres Mr. Rich when you need him?? :nc:
