Has it ever been tried to have a theme for the month? For instance in April, everyone could make a spring dress and post links to the pictures of finished projects. May could be shorts, a skort, or a skirt. June, a summer top ect.

Im in that sounds like fun. I have to make an easter dress for my cabbage patch kid sewing club, but I love to sew and my daughter is a great model for all my stuff so I always have someone to sew for.

I'd be up for that too. I have three GK I'm sewing for plus myself and my daughters on occasion. Then I could justify more fabric!!

themse sound like a great idea-we did do a child's 2 piece outfit at one time (or maybe it was just something for a child and I did a 2 piece outfit?).

Great idea, but my bandwidth is just about all spoken for on the server. We need an offsite place for the photos.

Why not set up a Yahoo.com picture site like Joann has for the quilts that we do. The site is free to use as long as you are registered.

Everyone could sign up for their own photobucket account at photobucket.com and just post links to the pictures. It's a free service.

Well, have you all decided on what the theme would be or is everyone too busy?
I am all for this, we could start in May or just have a quick, simple one for
April.

To get things rolling, I think we'll need to pick something to start with. Let's see who bites and what everyone's primed for. How's that? Vote here :)
1. Something to hang on a wall (seasonal decor?)
2. Plush/stuffed chachkas
3. Get a Jump on the Holidays project
4. Summer blouse
5. Kiddy outfit/Baby layette
6. Something for a man/boy in your life
7. Summer dress
8. Skirt
9. Accessory (handbags anyone?)
10. Challenge: One of the above, using ONLY items ALREADY in your stash.

I like 7, 8, or 10.

I'm good for April or May.

Also, should we post something in general sewing to let people know about it that don't usually read this board?

I would be interested in being a part of this. Time permitting of course. I would be up for any of these, less so for 1 or 2 but will do. They are my least motivators. Then again, my husband wants something to hang in his office......

you're funny, Laura. :) "chachka" is yiddish for trinket. It's a catch-all term in the States. Not too many people have been warmed-up for a chachka project (you know, stuffed animals, pin cushions, draft stoppers, what-have-you)....Now I wonder if that's b/c nobody knew what it was!!
How about something more general? A summer wardrobe piece, and extra credit for working within your current stash?

This one is a very broad category, to suit the interests of those who spoke up first. Any summer wardrobe piece, for you or for someone else, any age/size, plus a big pat on the back for anyone who works within their stash to make it. Goal is to post pics using outside photo sites in order to share our work by May 31. All are welcome to join in at any time.

For those of you who don't have a site to host your photos, I suggest photobucket. the site is www.photobucket.com and the accounts are free.

Well....I have a large stash that I am hoping to turn into a wardrobe for work theis summer. With the contest in mind, I cut out a dress from McCalls M4440. Made it yesterday, and will put up pictures when I have finished the blouse to go with it.

I have a blouse in progress...actually it's a muslin for a blouse, but I chose a wearable fabric, so that I can complete it and have a little something extra for the effort! When I finish that I can move on to a really fun dress for my daughter.

So are we all gonna set up a photobucket account? I have my fabric in the wash right now and getting ready to at least get my project cut out! I'm doing Simplicity pattern #4610. I think I am gonna do the shorts with the rhumba top instead of the capri pants. I'm a bit nervous about the ruffles but I'll muddle through it. Stephi gave me some good tips for that! This is fun!!

I believe that Mary said she has limited bandwidth, so I just saw photobucket as an option. I've used them for a few years now, and is, I feel one of the better free image hosting sites.

I hope that made sense, or was somewhat relevant. I'm trying to fall asleep right now. :/

I think photobucket is better but I have a yahoo photo site set up already with pictures so I will probably just use that.

I am going to make a dress for my daughter's b-day. It's a suprise so I must work by night. She is a strawberry shortcake-aholic. Once I finish my mother's day apple placemats, I will get started on my dress. Good luck to you all!!

I have finished the actual outfit and almost finished the matching little sis one, But I also want to make headbands or bows or some other stuff. I really need to use up some of my pile on the floor stash. Its the pile that wouldnt fit into one of the two closets and I cant remember what I bought them for specifically. So I am using them up as fast as possible!!!

I finally quilted my fabric this afternoon, took me 2 hours!! Tomorrow I will cut out the pattern pieces. It's my 2nd attempt at free motion quilting (or quilting anything at all, even in straight lines) and it puckered somewhat but since all the pieces kind of puckered, they all look the same and so I'm ok with it, it will give it a totally unique appearance, that's for sure.

I did get to start on my daughter's dress last night. It's white eyelet, with a lilac cotton voile lining--soooo soft! I started on lining last night, and was proud to show her my progress this morning. She frowned, and said, but I want the pink fabric to be on TOP! Hmm...

Oh Andrea,

My daughters last birthday I was picking out sprinkles for her cupcakes and all they had was blue and pink ( I wanted purple to match dora) So I went with pink because me girl is so girly, I figured she wouldnt want blue. I got home and finished them while she was taking a nap and when she woke up and saw them all she had to say was "I wanted blue sprinkles". I about fell out because never in a hundred years did I expect her to pick blue over pink, LOL!!!

Stephi

Kids, who can figure them out??!!

Well, I just spent the last 4 days ripping out all the quilting I put into the jacket. Once I was done and I left it for a day or two I just hated how it looked. So I sat and ripped threads on the fabric and backing on 8 fat quarters. I finally went outside for the last bit which was using tweezers to pull all the little ends out and let them go in the breeze, so my deck is covered in little white thread bits. THEN I read the directions for quilting a piece and now I have them laid out on the table ready to pin and baste before attempting this again. The rate I am going I will be lucky to get this done by the end of the month. Grumble grumble. I learned my lesson, do it right the first time, don't cut corners!!!

Just realized what we're doing, but luckily the dress I'm frantically finishing for my niece will qualify (it's a birthday present).

I've got her matching doll dress done (did it completely by hand while my husband drove us back from Virginia).

Does it count as a stash fabric if I bought it for this project over 2 months ago?

Ticia, yes it sounds like stash to me! I think you can count it as anything you like ;) This is all informal and fun, and really just lighting a fire for a bunch of us. Have fun with it, don't stress. (What were you doing in VA? I'm in VA, but I was away in NY all last week.)
My project's going nicely. I was just about to have DD try on dress so I could mark the hem length, but when I took off her shirt, I found a tick (we'd been out in the woods a bunch), and I got side tracked, trying to find tick-removal info, and then it was her bedtime... I'll get her to try it on in the morning. In the mean time, I'm sewing on buttons tonight, and some other hand-work finishing & embellishment.

On vacation, my husband's parents gave us a week in their time-share, and we stayed in Colonial Williamsburg, and had a blast!
Well, I've got her dress all cut out, and should hopefully get it all sewn up on Wednesday.

Well, I'm out for the month, my machine went on the fritz on the weekend  I got it serviced about 3 months ago and I kind of thought it sounded a bit off after a week or so, but kept going with it, then I noticed a 'clicking' especially when doing anything other than a straight stitch, and really bad on the left straight stitch or a zigzag, and started breaking needles, so I pulled all the thread out and handturned the wheel to see if I could figure it out, low and behold my needle is hitting my bobbincase!!! So, it went in yesterday and I am lost. I've serged everything I can, I may pull out the old machine but just haven't had the energy to get off the computer this morning. That's ok though, I'm up for next month!

I like your contrast stitching :) I made a dress for Kaela 2 yrs ago with similar pleats, but she went and grew out of it! Nice outfit!

Here is the link to my dress I finished for my daughter. It is a suprise birthday present for her, so I've only been able to work on it after 10 at night when I get my 3 month old to bed. I now have to fix a nightgown I was sewing. Got a fold caught in the serger and now have to cut out a new yoke.

Thanks Lyn. I hadn't sewn since high school and about 5 years ago got the quilt bug and told my husband I would quilt but hated making clothes. 2 years later my 3 year old needed a hawaiian dress so I reluctantly bought a super easy pattern and muddled through it and all of a sudden I liked the idea of my kids having unique clothing plus they are big for their ages and when I went to buy my now nearly 5 year old clothes in the girls department, I was not impressed with the adult influenced clothing, I mean this stuff I would term 'sexy'. I am definitely no prude, at least I don't think so. Anywho, I was sewing hurriedly just to get to another pattern, but now on the last couple of projects, I've become more anal and want those darts to line up with seams, etc. I am going to try to make my husband a shirt for his birthday and maybe a July 4th inspired outfit for the girls. Then it will be time to work on costumes. I have 3 to make this year. 'Phew'.

Oh, I'm loving seeing everyone's stuff. I've got most of the sewing done on my niece's dress. I just have to actually sew the skirt on, and sew the lining on for the dress.

I think it's going to be absolutely adorable (or at least that's what I really hope). Yeah, this is fun.

don't think that I have ever posted on the site before, have enjoyed the newsletter for a long time. I have always sewn for myself, built kinda funny. All my kids are too, Loooong legs and arms. Made buying tough. I have been looking at some of the sights that you all have posted and thinking about maybe getting some pics of my last one at home together. So far this year we have done 2 prom dresses and are working on jeans and capris for this year.

Just got wind of the challenge, don't know if I have enough time to try and get something done. Between Prom's graduations and the rest been a buzy month.

Has anyone decided what next months challenge is yet? Perhaps I will just wait, depends on what is out and ready to go.

I'll keep track of this thread and see what I can do.

Oh,guess I should introduce myself, LOL. My name is Forest and I work full time as a sheriff's department dispatcher. I have 3 grown and gone children and 1 left to go. She is 16 and 6' tall so alot of her clothes have to be custom made. I enjoy working with her and her friends to make special things for them.

Absolutely adorable (and the kids pretty cute too!). I've got the dress done, now I'm going to do the matching apron, and just realized I needed to add a collar to the doll's dress, if it's supposed to truly match. Just have to figure out a fabric for the apron.

I am going to get involved with the June sewing challenge. It has been fun looking at all the posted pictures from the May challenge. June will be a month when I will need projects to keep me busy as I just had surgery on the 24th of May and have some recuperation to do. My stash is full of beautiful fabric just waiting to be used. Can't wait to get something started. :bluesmile

Here is my spring dress, I look really sour in the picture but I was doing it with the timer, and was wondering if it was going to work
Very light and comfy, I did a full muslin (I usually don't too much in a hurry most of the time) and used a sleeveless wrap blouse pattern from vogue as my starting point.

For some reason I couldn't see your pictures, all it said was it was from filelodge, but no pictures. GROWL!!!!!!!!!!

Pictures are taken of my dress, and it was wildly popular, she's trying to convince her Mom of letting her wear it pretty much anywhere (school next year, church...... you name it). Her Mom keeps saying if we find an appropriate place............ It's really kind of funny.

I'm sure you've made a ton already in the past. I wish I could make hubby something for Father's Day - I think he would laugh! He didn't believe I could sew until I dragged my machine out and started sewing again - I showed him!

Did you post you May project? I looked and couldn't find it - maybe I missed it?

A little late but here's what I was working on for the month of May. Some of the pictures are grainy-they didn't crop very well...sorry but you can get the idea. And they were all out of stash material except my dgs surfer shorts-that he picked out himself.

Connor's outfits are a size, Ali's size 4 and Justin's surfer shorts are 7's. It's amazing how much faster things go together with a serger. Plus I do marathon cutting sessions, then sit down and sew. I still do waistband and elastic insertions by hand and with a regular machine as well as the hems, the basic portion of the outfit is done and I have them stacked up beside me when I sit down and just keep going. Then I press everything and do waistbands, etc. I'm not getting very far this month so far though. LOL

Ticia, if I remember right, it's only a couple of main pattern pieces and I think a lining piece, so it goes together quickly. I probably spent the most time trying to line up where the stupid button holes go. It does call for snaps up the legs but my dil said she didn't care if there were snaps or not so, of course, my choice was NOT!!

Lyn - sure. I'm going to have to write them down in my book though as I promised my husband less buying and a little more sewing in order to free up some space. I sew the old fashioned way - I do french seams, no serger, ruffles, gathers, hems, by hand all that - no special ruffle foot or gathering foot. So major cutting sessions lead to lots of pieces.......and slow sewing. I just recently researched how to get some of those fett because I have this completely terrific machine (apparently it does the dishes if you have the right equipment....).

Point being - slow sewing now, but fast sewing on the horizon so I would love the pattern numbers. My boys really want some of those shorts - but they're skinny minnies so I really need to make them for them. I think I had to much coffee this morning. I'm just ramblin on, and on, and on...... :whacky:

Brandy, sorry I forgot last night to look up those patterns. Both the boys shorts were made from a pj pattern-Butterick 3042. I just folded up the legs to where it looked like the right length for the shorts and cut them there. I actually thought Justin's surfer shorts would be too long but he liked them that way.

Ticia, thanks for the pattern #, I'll have to check it out.
