Your local library (or interlibrary loan) is a great place to start with finding learn to sew books. You can check out the ones they have and find the one that you like best. Best of all you get to try them for free. After you find the one you like best and run out of being able to renew it, then you will be confident that the one you buy will be helpful.

Readers Digest has a nice one that I have seen recommended on several lists.

"Let's Sew" written for the national 4-H council by Nancy Zeiman is a very basic book that you will quickly out grow but might be a good place to start (check with you local cooperative extension office for this and other low cost materials)

"Sew with Confidence" (Nancy Zieman of Nancy's Notions) and Simplicity's "Simply the Best Sewing Book" are two others that you might find helpful for starting and for a basic reference there after.

Another source you might want to check out and purchase is one or more of the The KWIK Sew "Sewing for Baby" "Sewing for Toddlers" "Sewing for Children" or one of the adult books. Depending on who you are sewing for, they are very helpful with good patterns, good diagrams, lots of basic instructions and lots of variations on the basic patterns. Many of us on the list have these books and use them when sewing for our children. I am going to sew myself a tshirt out of "Easy Sewing the Kwik Sew Way" tonight or tommorow. If you get stuck, you could come to the boards and say, on pg 34 of Sewing for toddlers.... and someone would be able to help.

WASH your fabric. There is nothing more heartbreaking than going to all of the time and effort to make something and then have it shrink 2 sizes the first time you wash it, not to mention puckered seams and general ickyness, especially with cotton and natural fibers. Wash, dry and iron it on the most agressive setting that you think the garment will be cleaned at. If it is denim or a 100% cotton knit, you might want to go through the process 2 or three times to take care of progressive shrinkage.

Enough novel writing, I hope this is helpful and good luck with your new adventure.

P.S. Some of my favorite occasional sewing books belong to the local library. I just check them out when I need them and they store them and have paid for them. (Short Kutz, which is a guide to recycling adult clothing into childrens clothing is one that I check out often)

Hello

The Let's Sew by Nancy Z. is a great book. Lots of great pictures. Also the Simplicity: Simply the Best Sewing Book is great.

A great website is the home sewing association. They have sewing lessons and lots of great information guideline sheets that you can print out on lots of topics.

Hope that helps.

There was a previous thread in the Beginner and General Sewing forum where people have asked for recommendations on sewing books. Here is a link to those threads. It may give you some more ideas for books.

Angie,
I don't know how you found this site, but sometimes people just find the discussion boards and don't "come in the front door, so to speak".. One of the sites you put in your earlier thread is from this very site, here.. (sew-whats-new).. Have you discovered the beginner sewing lessons on this site.. If not, go to the home page and start exploring, It will take a long time for you to discover all the treasures on this site.. All kinds of how-to's...Check them out.....
