That's a good idea, and probably a time saver too. I do way too much impulse pattern buying then realize I have one almost exactly the same at home. I am also learning to keep a little piece of fabric from a project in a bag in my purse, then when I am shopping I can find things that match, like fabric for a skirt I just bought, now I need a top to match!

I have a project binder that I take with me on every shopping excursion. In it I keep a listing of every fabric, thread, pattern, notion, etc, that I've already purchased. If I see a pattern online that I want to purchase in the future, I put the pattern name and number down in my binder so I'll have it for the next shopping day. Then I'll cross it off of my list when I buy it. This prevents me from "doubling up" on things I've already bought, especially patterns and fabric! Yeah, old brain cells are creepin' in... I am so glad I am not the only one who does that. I actually have to clean out my purse from time to time and figure out what ones I have bought and not bought. Another el cheapo tip I iron interfacing to my favorite (especially vintage) patterns so they hold up better!! Also if you see a dress or anything you like, but cant find the pattern for cheap...Check out your local thrift shop you can find something close and take it apart then use it as a pattern. MJADAA, what a good idea! I love tips like this - so simple. So easy that I might even do it. LadySloPokes, just thinking about your binder makes me tired. It's a wonderful system, and I salute your organizational skills. I'm not criticizing; far from it! But trying to keep up such a detailed binder would take all the fun out of sewing for me. The only problem I have with MJADAA's idea is that half the times I end up at the fabric store, I left home without knowing I was going there. I'll just decide to pop in. I'm lucky if I can remember to bring my coupons with me. Sparky

I'm horribly behind on this, but one thing I do is to scan my patterns front and back covers and print it out, so when I'm at the fabric store I can know how much fabric I need for that project without having to search out the pattern again. Ticia |

I think keeping everything together in case you need to know is a terrific idea. A girlfriend of mine has a smaller organizer for coupons that she keeps with her at all times and has them organized by types of food (canned foods, cereals, etc.) She even has one labeled "mommy things" for feminine items. I have seen the bigger organizers but not one small like she has which is what I would want to keep in my purse. She said she got it at a dollar store but had to search like a mad woman to find it. It's about 8 or so inches in length if that and maybe 3-4 inches tall. Very compact. I am gonna start looking and pick one up for coupons and to keep a list of sewing notions in as well. Very good tip!
