Can you help me get some terms straight? I'm looking at silks, online to get a price-range idea, and I see more fabric types than I expected. Some I know, and some I don't know. These are the ones that stump me:
Charmeuse & habotai. What kind of hand? What kind of uses?

Andrea - I am like you. I am convinced that fabric producers change names of fabrics as fast as car manufacters do. When I was a youngish woman the favourite silk for elegance was silk chantung. I get blank stares every where when I mention it. Try the following - are very interesting

mm...thanks nancy. I found the Wintersilks descriptions amusing, b/c they're retailers who clearly love their products (great stuff, too. I love their catalog!). And the About link was good b/c it also included a page of sewing tips--needle size, preferred seam finishes, for ex.
