Hi --I have a question. I don't know how many of you sell/buy off of ebay but in the last year, I have bought several things and last week listed 3 outfits of Sarah's. Yesterday, I logged into Ebay to see if there were any watchers, buyers, etc and had no problem. Yesterday afternoon (several hours later) I tried again only to find out that my password was invalid. I called my husband thinking he had changed it for whatever reason and he had not. He tried to log on and couldn't. So--turns out that the EBAY people locked our account and took my listings off. My husband called them and they said that there was evidence of unauthorized use or something like that and shut everything down. He had that account set up in 1999 and they asked him all of the info he used then and he could hardly remember it but anyway, they got the password reset and my listings back on. It puzzled me b/c I have never had anything like that happen. I logged into the paypal account (which scares me anyway) and everything was good with that--checked my bank account and no pending unauthorized transactions.
Have any of you had any problems like that??? Nothing appeared tampered with..everything was the same as it was earlier so I don't have a clue what could've happened. The only thing I can think of that happened is that I had put a comment on the listings to email me at AOL if there were any questions and the email address on the account is his yahoo account..I guess maybe they saw the discrepancies in the 2 emails--I don't know. They didn't specify anything but reset everything so I guess it's all OK.
The only thing that happens is we get the spam emails supposedly from ebay wanting us to verify this and that and I just delete them. This time is wasn't a verify email just an email or message on the account that there was something going on and we'd have to contact ebay personally and not through email..never did they ask billing info like the spam ones. When he reset the password and everything he got a questionaire from ebay about how our experience was, etc and a verifying email about the phone call and password change.
I am now leery of ebay! In my heart I think it was just b/c of the email address thing but it sorta made me nervous. Has anybody else had any problems?

Hi Julie,
I think they should have told you what exactly was the problem...if only to put your mind at ease.
It may have had nothing to do with anything you did. I once received a fake email, supposedly from PayPal, saying that I had successfully bought something on Ebay. It looked just like a message 'invoice' one would get after a purchase, with all of the seemingly appropriate links. The scammers used a *legitimate item* from Ebay...I'm sure the seller of the item had no knowledge of its use. I knew that I hadn't bid on any such thing, so I didn't click on anything in the email...but I did report it to Paypal. This was the 'trickiest' spam I have ever received since it really did look legit.
Take care,
Donna

We have gotton stuff like that also and I thought it was legit as well. I did contact ebay then and they said no it's not legit, etc and to ignore anything further like that. Once we were able to get into Ebay I read the messages they had sent and they never specified what was done but it was just weird.

i know when i have been checking out the sewing machines they have been having a LOT of problems with fraud sellers, and the 2 e-mail thing is their thing, the feedback one and the one that they want you to send info is very different, maybe call back on Monday(or today) and just confirm all that happened yesterday and ask why, better safe than sorry.

I have been a seller on Ebay for almost 2 years. I've only had one problem and that was a warning message sent to me about my listings that were removed. It appears that I specifically told someone to "check my other listings for a specific item" that would work with this one. They told me I could only use generic terms, not specific words. I've gotten burned a few times from buyers, and get all those "lovely" spam messages too. You just need to remember that if Ebay is contacting you, they will use your full name from your account -- never "ebay seller" or "friend" or whatever. And like you mentioned, they never ask for personal information in an email message.

Check your listings to see if you've inadvertently cross referenced something improperly. As for multiple email addresses, I've got a couple and have never had an issue with them. My listings reference one email (hotmail) and Ebay has my personal email (it helps me to distinguish which messages are legit).

I also agree, that to follow-up with them on why you were cut-off. Ask them if something in your listing was improperly listed. I know they get "weird" when you use brand names (Tommy Hilfiger, GAP, etc.) because of copyright infringement issues. Another thought is that someone complained about you and this was their resolution.

Sorry for being so chatty....hope this helps too!

We've done lots of Ebay/Paypal shopping and some selling. I am thinking it was the two emails as we had kind of the same thing, though they didn't cut us off, but we did get emails and messages on our 'my ebay' page regarding the 'unauthorized use' on our account. There is so much spam with Ebay and Paypal, you really have to be careful, but it is true, that they always send something with your name, at the beginning. There is a place you can send copies of the spam emails to <email address removed for privacy> (I'm not positive about the address but its in the ebay site) and they get back to you really quickly. Same thing with Paypal, someone keep sending emails to an old email address telling me my account needs to be updated, and I emailed paypal with it and it was spam again. We did have someone try to use our email address once, and Ebay dealt with it really quickly. I'm pretty happy with both companies.

My husband actually spoke w/Ebay so it was a real thing. I have received just countless of those spoof emails and sometimes I delete them just b/c they are so frequent. I am not sure what to make of this and plan on calling them today. It's really bugged me all weekend!

Hi Julie

Your account suspension should not have been caused by the discrepency of email address.

Since you recovered your listing and account with no problem, my take is that eBay suspended your account due to some alert and nothing personal. For example (just examples for past cases), by chance you may have a word in your listing that triggered the alert OR someone could be using your eBay account name to spam others and got reported. It could be many reasons that triggered the suspension. But it doesn't happen to a lot of accounts and it is one way they protect their buyers and eBay themselves. Once you communicated with them, they should reactivate your account immediately. From time to time, I get messages from eBay stating someone else tried to change my password. Nowadays there're always some evil people at work somewhere (hope they're not reading this forum).

If your email handle was borrowed by a spammer (or a virus), then it's another problem.

If you are not sure whether a message is from eBay or from a spammer, you can check your messages in My eBay. When eBay has important communications to you, they're in My eBay message box too. Whenever in doubt, contact them. They have a huge customer support team. That's what they're there for.
