*comes out of lurker mode..*
I bought a fairly simple pattern to try my hand at sewing for my daughter. The pattern is New Look 6576.

The dress...

Is there a way to "fix" this? The dress has two inside panels on the front and back around the neck (to keep from seeing the reverse of the fabric?). The neck seems to fit pretty well but the arm and sides are pretty wide on her. I'm not sure if you can see the gaping or not in the pics? The dress has not been hemmed yet as I was waiting to see how long it was on her.

Thank you all, and I'm so glad to have found these forums. :)

Toddler sizes are really strange in some of the pattern catalogs. I made my dgd a cute little summer outfit when she was about a year old. It fit her when she was 3. However, sometimes they fit well, I really can't explain it. Anyway, you proably have two choices. You can take it apart and cut it down but if it overall fits, you can just take it up under the arms and take it up at the shoulders (if needed). which is kind of the same thing.

She is adorable!

I have had the same problem with my toddler (by the way, your little one is adorable.) She's smaller through the torso and things are big on her. I would probably take it apart and fix it to where it fit the way you like it . You can always try taking it up and if you don't like it, do something else. Good luck!

I'm new to sewing, but I can tell you what I know of toddler sizes from knitting. Usually head and neck openings are large because baby's heads are proportionally large comparied to their bodies. However, the opening size stays about the same until you get to 3 or 4 y/o.

For the dress if it was me, I'd probably just finish this up according to the directions and choose a smaller size that seems more appropriate and make a second one. She will probably grow into this one in 6 months or so.

ETA: Almost forgot, she's extreamly cute. :)

Welcome to the boards! I would probably tend to do what Lynnie suggests, however I'd also be tempted to take it up at the shoulders some if possible. Then make a smaller size. Such a cutie pie you have!! Let us know what you decide to do.

Has anyone else used New Look patterns? I just picked up a nightgown pattern for my granddaughter but now I'm concerned about what size to make her.

Thank you everyone :) I think she's adorable too

I made the 12 mo thinking it would fit her in June when she's a year old. But given how big it is on her now at 9 mo 3w, I'm seriously doubting it'll fit anytime soon if I leave it as is. I think you have the right of it Lynnie, I'll finish it up and hang it in her closet for several months.

Thanks ladies for your suggestions and lovely comments :)

Glad you stopped lurking!!

I have this same exact pattern I bought for my NB Niece...Yes it does run a bit big!! I had this problem with my daughters dress in a different pattern so I took a little bit of the side seams open and sewed in a ribbon on both sides..Then you can tie it back to take up the width (also will let her grow into it and you will get a bit more wear) I also took the buttons off and moved them up to take up length. In another dress that WAS too short for her I made an extra bottom hem by leaving the original hem in and just tacking up the lenght I need too. Now that she shot up I took the tacks out and it fits great!! This is an Idea for any dress or pants that are too big.

Example of the same pattern you have done by me

I did one with the shapes on it and didnt like it so I just do the jumper part now. It is super simple and soo cute!!

Hope this helps,
Stephi

With my kids' dresses that were too long, I always just took tucks at the bottom. I'd just space them out so they looked like part of the design. I also found that when I did that, I could hide the hem in the lowest tuck (nothing like making the most of an opportunity.) You can also put horizontal tucks in the bodice of a dress if it is too long waisted or vertical tucks if it is just a little too wide.

When I was sewing for the Grandkids when they were little I used the Kwik sew books as they were fairly close to size but if I needed to change the size it was simple to do as you just trace off the main pattern to what ever size you need. My grandson was really skinny so sometimes would have a size 2 or 3 in height but only a size one in the width.

It may be just me, but I think the armholes in that pattern are way too large.. I know it is a jumper pattern, but I still think the armholes are way out of proportion . I do like the way the tabs come over the shoulder and button below the front shoulder.. :bg: :bg:

I find the toddler patterns 1/2-3 are quite large around for almost all the companies except Ottobre. Kwik Sew is my second choice. I find for my 7 month old granddaughter I am making size 1 or 12 months in length, and 9 month in width. Though I did make some 'capri's for her this week that the crotch was down to her knees and the bottom of the capri was floor length. I though the crotch length looked long, I had to cut 3 inches off the top!!

Maybe I should try Ottobre, I'm not having very much luck with my second outfit for her either. =/

and yes, the armholes are huge. I didn't mind the length as I could do a large hem on the bottem and let it out as she got bigger, but the armholes are just too big not to mention the body itself is too wide adding to the gaping pit of the armhols. lol!

I pinned the two buttons I want to use with the dress (so I won't use them on something else lol) and hung the dress in her closet where I'll see it on a constant basis so I won't forget about it. I'll finish it when she fits it, hopefully
