Just thought I would post a picture of a make-up or travel bag that I made and just love the way it turned out.

I attend a monthly sewing club at my dealer's where she shows us different sewing techniques, etc. This project was to get us to use the built-in stitches on our machines. We started it in the class but had to finish it on out own. This is my end result. Will be taking it in to the next class for our show & tell.

I've posted 5 pics you can use the viewer on the right to see the others.

Lovely work Judy, did you use the embroidery stitches to quilt the fabric together before assembling? I have never thought of doing that and it seems to have worked really well.

Your work is beautiful. What are those pillow like things with bags hanging over the side? It looks like something for sewing pins and snippets of thread. Is that right? I might like one of those!

I wish my quilts came together as beautifully as yours!

Thanks all for your lovely comments.

Jan, yes... I used two fat quarters with cotton batting between and quilted with the fancy stitches using my walking foot. Used my darning foot for free motioning the stippling etc. The fancy threads are mainly Sulky rayon on top and I used bobbin thread in the bobbin. After it was quilted then I squared it up into a rectangle, added the zipper and on the wrong side folded in the ends to the middle. Sewed the ends and turned it right-side out. Easiest bag to make.

Ronda, those are pin cushions and thread catchers that I gave to my aunts, sister and niece at Christmas. I bought my pattern here in Ottawa, but here's a link to some others that I found...

Thank you so much for the links, Judy. I'm going to make one this week. I don't have a thread snippet bag and I really need one. I'm terrible about tossing my threads on the floor and sweeping them up later. :whacky:

Thank you for the link to the thread catcher/ pin cushion. I liked it so much that I had tried to make one before Ihad seen the link. I will make another for my sister; the instructions are so simple it will be easier this time.

The bag is beautiful, Judy! I particularly like the flowers you quilted on there...free motion? They look really neat!

Donna...yes the flowers were done via free-motion. I did so many on the two diaper bags that I made using the stencil that I made that I can now do them without marking. By the way did you notice the "ribbon" that I did below the flowers. It is just two lines that keep crossing each other. It is easy to do and looks neat. When I took a free motion class, the woman I took it from always had us draw the design with a pencil on scrap paper. Once you get comfortable with the movements then it just takes some practice on quilt sandwiches.

Have you tried any free-motion quilting?

Judy, I checked out your photos and you do very beautiful work! I love everything - your color selections as well as choice of embroidery stitches. Since Mother's Day is coming up I was thinking your bag might be a nice present to make for my sisters-in-laws.

Thanks Patty. I can only take credit for the stitches and quilting on the bag. It was my local dealer that had us make the bag in a class. The object was to force us to use the stitches to decorate, etc. The bag is really easy to make and could be made in any size and would be a great gift. Don't know if you need instructions...but here is a summary of how it was made. Let me know if you need further explanation. Good luck.

__________

Materials: two FQs (one for inside and one for outside of the bag and some batting the same size as the fat quarters, a zipper and of course...decorative threads.

You cut off a 2" strip from the outside FQ to make the loops. Loops are made by folding & pressing the two outside edges to the centre, then folding & pressing again. Then you top stitch along both edges. Cut two pieces approx. 7 " long. Then press in half to make the loops.

Then she told us to use chalk to divide the FQ into 3 sections and use decorative stitches in the two of the sections and to do free-motion stippling in the other one. I don't like stippling so I did a variety of free-motion as well. Also, I used my walking foot when doing the decorative stitching.

When the stitching is finished...you just square it up to an even rectangle. Then you add the zipper along the length of the bag. We used an extra long zipper (22") and then sewed across the ends and cut off the excess from each end - just make sure the zipper slide is inside the bag before sewing over the ends.

To sew up the bag, you start with the bag wrong side out. (I've added some pics of the bag from the wrong side (http://www.flickr.com/photos/heyjudee/133471609/in/set-348651/).) Align the zipper in the centre. Then fold both ends in to meet at the zipper - add the loops between the zipper and the folds. Then sew across each end. I used a 1/2" seam.
