So what is everyone working on?

I just finished a plain pair of black pants and I'm getting ready to start a shirt. Remember this stuff
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e212/DorothyLong/VF061-33thm.jpg

I was planning on making a short sleeve shell type top right up until I had the fabric on the cutting table but in the end decided on a Hawaiian type button down shirt.
What really decided me was when I looked in the button box and found some black and some black and gold antique art deco type buttons. They don't match but they are all black or black and gold and they are the same size (mostly). So I figured their differences will just add interest.

So what about you guys, whatcha makin?

Well, I'm working on 2 baby slings (have them cut out) for gifts and I have a bag cut out and the interfacing sewn in as well--just a small tote bag with an oval bottom.
I have another diaper bag to make but have to find the right fabric for that. No luck so far..
that's about it for me unless you count the countless strips of fabric I have been serging to make Sarah's Easter basket..obviously didn't finish--maybe for next year. I ended up buying one for her from Pottery barn so I was happy with that. The woven serger basket is just adorable though. Julie

Slow knitting - have just finished 10 hats in a dark brown boucle for shoeboxes (Operation Christmas Child) but they look like afro wigs. All the worship group put them on at church last Sunday and started singing reggae. I thought I would wet myself it was so funny! Anyway - I am now using up yarn making gloves and mittens. I seem to be on a pause from sewing for a while.

Just finished for DH a nice laptop bag, accessary bags for power supply, MP3, radio transmitter, multiple cell phones (for different countries), head phones, microphones right before his business trip. Wondering how many accessaries a guy needs.

In the middle of making a few lumber supports for our computer chairs and my craft chair.

Now that DH is out of the house, I will start on new covers for my accessaries (sewing machines and serger) and a new Apron and a sexy low rise boxer.

Once my velcro order arrives next week, I will start making a few wrist supports for our friends.

Just finished a corduroy jean jacket for myself, and am sewing up a long housecoat in cuddle satin for my daughter's birthday. Then back to sewing for the granddaughters! Lots of summer sundresses this year.

I just yesterday finished 3 embroidered easter tote bags for my dds, and skirts for each of them to wear today to Easter Sunday church services.
Today, I am taking the day off- lol!
Next up, 9 yo dd has decided to "be a girl again" which translates to less tomboy clothes. So today she picked out a bunch of skirt, short, and shirt patterns for me to sew for her for this spring and summer.

Hope the link works.

I made a shirt with a bodice top similar to this one, hoping it would work for under a button down blouse, but it was WAY to low cut for a professional setting. So I raised the top by 2 inches and curved the side seams so that undergarments can't be seen.

Julie, the pattern is New look 6462. Also has shorts and capris. Very easy pattern to use and it only took a couple hours to whip up that skirt-even with putting a zipper in.

Just finished up an Easter project for our church - 3 dresses that were donated to an inner city school. Started a cute bright green gauze sundress for my daughter. When that is finished, I'm making a 3 pc linen suit for myself. Happy Stitching!

Just finished 9 table runners for the tables at church for Easter Sunrise Breakfast along with 9 potted silk flower arrangements for the tables. Tonight I'm starting 4 sets of drapes and valances for the new nursery at our church and in the middle of a spring/summer jacket.

I've got too many things on my plate right now -- in addition to my wedding dress, I've got fabric for 2 sundresses, giraffe print for a purse, and a bunch of other fabric for pants or skirts and some knit tops. But for now I have to focus on the wedding dress. I haven't even made my muslin yet. If only I had more time! It so fun to hear what everyone is doing!

Not much, been doing a lot of hemming (mine and dh's), repairs (man kids are hard on stuff) and just took pictures of my dress I'm planning on entering in the threads fashion challenge, I have great amibitions to enter this for years and this is the first time I have ever completed my garment, and it's EARLY!!
I'm also experimenting with making a skirt from a bunch of my hubbies old jeans, but... not much sewing is to be had of late b/c of trying to get this house ready to sell. :bang:

That's so great that you are entering. I've thought about it, but I think it's a bit out of my league.
Keep us filled in on how it goes.

Hi Laura, thank you. Yes, they have a string of clear Christmas lights in them. Not hard to make really. Glass block from Home Depot or Lowe's, you drill a hole in the block on the bottom, clean it out, put the lights in, then you have to find clipart to put on the sides. If you want detailed instructions, email me and I'll be happy to supply them. Most time consuming part I've found is picking out the clipart I want to use and adding to it, etc to get what I'm looking for.

Currently making 2 pairs casual pants for DH and one for me. Then have a stretch wool cut out to make a mid-sleeve top. I dyed it so it's now pink rather than cream and has felted slightly so now nice and soft.
Then have lots to do for the boys.

I've had spring fever. I've been making play outfits and summer dresses for my dgd. I've also started doing some summer skirts and sun dresses for my 18 yr old. I need to stop and get the vests and bow ties ready for my dd's date and my son for the prom this weekend. I had to wait for her date to come home from college for measurments and his date hasn't found her dress yet Last night I learned from my dd that I'm about to be asked to make 3 dresses for a musical (Little Shop of Horrors) in 2 weeks. I'll do it because it is the last thing they will do before they graduate. I'll probably make a graduation dress for my dd too (not for her twin brother).

Just finished 2 nightgowns for dgd, 2 pairs of shorts for dgs, skirt almost complete-needs zipper and facings for dd, 3 pairs of pants-1 finished for dd-waiting for her to decide if she likes the swimsuit fabric for the contrasting yoke (hoping it will stretch some and get her through some of her pregnancy) or if she wants to go back to a knit and elastic before I finish up the other 2 but they are ready for the yoke at least. Still have a maternity top to make for dd and see if she likes the pattern before I go and make more. Thinking I'd better find a couple shirts or something to make my oldest dgs as he is the only one left out. Will post pics when I get it all done.

Well, I did a bad thing and I put iron on interfacing onto my daughters robe that I am making on cuddle satin and guess what - it puckered so much it looks like its all bubbly. BUT instead of sitting down and crying, I decided to free motion quilt the pocket and the facing (shawl collar) where the interfacing is. So after a few test drives, I put a flannel piece in behind, did the free motion quilting and I had a blast!! What fun!! And it looks great. So I am going to finish off the hand sewing tonight then take a pic and post it. Now I really want to quilt something, it was sssooooo easy!!

I would have cried first, then tried to figure out what to do! Neat idea, I'll have to remember that one, as I'm sure it will happen to me one day, too!

Working now on Rose's first jumper--muslin fit extremely well with one minor adjustment, and it hung from shoulders nicely with better drape than I thought was possible from quilter's cotton. Also have to line my niece's dress for parents 80th birthday party in May. I've been working on this dress on and off for a year, now it HAS to be done by May 11th. Oh, the procrastinator in me--LOL!

I'd also like to learn how to post pics of garments, etc., but I'm such a computer newbie. Anyone have any ideas for me on how to do this? :throw:

I love this group!

I heard a lady tell one day how she washed embroidered silk incorrectly. It puckered and shrank. She was totally devastated, then she did the same thing. She quilted it and had a lovely jacket. What is that saying about there being no mistakes in sewing, just creative ????

Lyn--thanks for the pattern #. I'm not really good with zippers at all. I have put in one zipper so far and it was in a baby sling and I put it in along the seam line on the side. I'm still working on zippers. Does your pattern work if I wanted to just do an elastic waist on the skirt? Or maybe I should just work hard on zippers. For some reason they are a little intimidating to me.

Here is a good clue for you. Anything that is fitted at the waist must have a zipper as the bust and hips are larger than the waist on most women. Without the zipper you won't be able to get it on.

They're right Julie, it's not a style that would work without a zipper. It's just a little 7" zipper...not hard at all and mine are by no means perfect! My secret though is to use lightweight Steam a Seam under the zipper so it doesn't move around. I think there is a double sided sewing tape that would work also....don't use regular double sided tape, it worked but it took forever to be able to pull the pieces of tape out from under the zipper when I was done! Now I just steam a seam it so it stays in place. Another trick I was taught years ago was to baste the opening closed, lay the zipper on the seam with the teeth down the middle, pin it and sew and then rip out the basting. Works but I think the other way works better. Good luck!

Hey guys I have been slacking from work this last week and am just now catching up. I am working on two cute capri pants outfits with pleated dress looking shirts (like the black and white outfit in an earlier post). I am going to list them on ebay since my daughter is stocked full of outfits and I am trying to use up material. Which brings me to ask "is there any one who would like some scap material?"
I have a bunch that is decent sized for quilting or just playing around with. I hate to throw it away I was thinking I might make some doll clothes with some of it.
I am also going to start messing around with maternity and nursery patterns and material as soon as I get some of this other stuff gone!! We are going to try to get preggers in a few months and I hate most of the maternity stuff in shops (that I can afford any ways!!).

Stephi

Just finished Elphie's kimono - she's a Wicked Witch Tonner doll, Tyler Wentworth body - a furisode one, enlarged and adapted from a Barbie pattern. While it isn't exactly sewing, I'm making her a pair of geta sandals to match. Those are the wooden ones that look like planks with a black thong and two stilts on the bottoms.

Here's the photo - it's at the bottom of my 'Stuff I made Elphie' page :Somewhere That's Green - Elphie (http://dorriebelle.tripod.com/id28.html)

This weekend, I hope to make a happi coat for Fiyero - another Tonner doll, he's a guy - and finish her kimono with the traditional undergarment and a better obi. After that, there's a blouse for me waiting for my attention, and I want to design a cross-stitch design for an upcoming college grad. Who knows what's next ?

I hope I get to read about more projects - everyone here inspires me !

Your doll -- and the clothes you've made her -- are beautiful.
I have a couple Tonner dolls that I dress. I've been thinking about getting another one and was seriously thinking about the green one.
Now I've seen what you've done, I am pretty sure that will be next.
I make the dolls something out of the scraps of almost everything else I make.
They have boxes full.
I find the size much easier to sew for than Barbie. I use the Tonner patterns and some Gene patterns but it is getting so that now I end up making most of the patterns myself.
I'm glad I'm not the only crazy lady that plays with dolls.

Well, I finished my tote bag that I mentioned I had cut out. I worked on it yesterday afternoon.
It's just a 4 panel tote with an oval bottom. I am not really fond of doing the oval bottoms b/c I haven't quite mastered the art of sewing them in. I baste the bottom in and them sew it right sides together and it just didn't end up like the picture..need practice! Overall, I suppose the bag turned out OK. It's made out of a cute spring material I had bought as a remnant and has 2 straps made out of the same material. I think I like sewing in the straps so that they are coming out of the bag instead of sewn to the outside. The pattern had me sew the straps on, then cut them down almost to stitch line and them fold them up and do an "x" stitch on the strap. I'll try to post a picture later on but I may use it for a small 2-3 diapers/wipes and a sippy cup bag for short trips out.

Seems like all of a sudden I got real busy--was able to read the instructions but not yet enough time to sit down and really 'digest' them. Thanks so much to you and everyone who is helping me! :bg:

Dorathy and Ellie,

the doll looks like one my duaghter has. SHe is Ella enchanted doll (daughters name is ella, so we had to have it) I call her amazon girl because she is so big and butch looking next to the feminine barbies. My daughter gets so madd because she tries to squeeze barbie clothes on her. She hasnt grasped the concept that some of us are bustier and wider than the classic barbie 00 frame, LOL!!

Just thought it was interesting!

Stephi--
The Ella doll is just a little shorter than our 16 inch dolls. The company that makes it is owned by Tonner now.
You could probably adjust the patterns for our dolls -- McCalls, I think, markets Tyler Wentworth patterns.
Vogue markets patterns for Gene dolls. They are a bit smaller than our dolls, but not much. Ella may be about the same size or you could alter those to fit your Daughter's doll.
Making simple patterns is easy for the dolls. You could easily make things that would make it easier for your daughter to dress that doll.

Here's a picture of my little paneled tote bag that I put together on Saturday. When I hung it on the door knob to photograph it, Sarah ran over and stood beside it and said "cheeeese" so she's modeling with the bag!!

The pictures of the little bag are the last 2 on the page.

I am thinking of doing the nursery in green and yellow ginghams. The paneled tote is cute too, is the material quilty looking or did you actually quilt it??

Very nice bag, Julie.

You have sewn lots. I like the other bags you've made as well, especially Moms purse and Marcias bag. I love black and white/ecru toile. Bags and totes are becoming so popular and not just for diapers  . Hopefully I'll make a few before the end of the year. For the bags you made using toile, was it regular weight or home dec yardage?

The toile is just regular weight. I have a thing for toile's and gingham as well!! Stephi--a support group would probably be in order hahahahaha!!
The fabric for the little tote is actually cotton. It's not quilted at all but has that look in the fabric. I think that's what I really liked about it. I had originally bought it with doing something else in mind but ended up making the tote.
I had a hard time the first bag I made out of the toile. I wanted to "match" up the storyline in the toile so when you looked all the way around the bag, you saw the story...that was a chore! I think I made alot of the toile purses (the black/ecru) while I was recuperating from my hysterectomy. I stayed with my parents since I couldn't lift the baby and mom went and bought tons of toile and some patterns and she and I sewed. We had a nice time with all that toile!

Hi, all. I haven't been on here in ages. Life gets in the way sometimes, you know? :dave: I have just finished 2 skirts, and have a dress and a sleeveless blouse in the works. (I'm taking lessons in how to draft my own patterns based on my body measurements, and I'm having a BLAST!). Another addiction to deal with .....

Bev, where are you taking the pattern drafting class? Is it online or are you taking it at a community college or from a book? Inquiring minds want to know. I've started the "Getting to the Point" Saf-T-Pockets jacket. I'm using a beautiful fabric of linen/cotton/rayon blend in dark purple. I bought enough to make a skirt or pants plus a polyester jacquard lavender for a coordinating blouse. Should make a nice summer suit. Happy Stitching!
