Has anyone made one of those border prints that seem to be so popular in ready to wear this spring?

What I really wondered is if any of you machine embroidery fans have tried making your own border?

I was thinking of doing a border using the chain stitch on my serger and some applique. It won't be until mid summer though because I've got a list as long as my arm of things I want to do.

www.berninausa.com has some pretty cool things called "stitch recipies" They take different stitches on the machines and mix them into rows to make some very nice borders. You might just want to check them out because the idea would be good, no matter what machines you have and many of the stitches are coimmon embellishment stitches on many machines. If you don't have those particular ones, you'd certainly be able to substitue stitches from your machine once you get the idea.

Those are very cool. I don't think my machine (not to mention me) could do half that. But yesterday my D*%$& parking tickets only cost half of what I thought they would so I headed to to fabric store. While there I found some lovely ladies -- Jan is familiar with these gals -- that will make a great applique border on a linen skirt. I just have to finish other stuff first!

Isn't anyone else intrigued with the idea of making your own border?

Well I did a make-up bag where I embellished using my built-in stitches - something like the stitch recipes on the Bernina site. Here is a close up where you can see how I tried to create a pattern.

And I have a RTW jean shirt were I am planning on doing some free-motion embroidery down the front beside the buttons and button holes...it's my idea of a way to "tack" the facings down. Not a border along the hem but a similar idea.

Judy,
That's beautiful work. My poor old machine doesn't do all those stitches. I do have a wavy one -- like rick rack -- that I like to top stitch with just to add a little unexpected to a garment. But I couldn't do a lot of that with my machine.

Well, maybe your poor old machine needs a new baby sister?

Oh Pam, I wish.
I've thought of getting one of the cheap models with lots of fancy stitches just for the fancy stuff. And I've drooled over embroidery machines.
But I just had to replace a sickly laptop. That I have to have for work.
So it will be awhile before I can spend that much money again.
Still I love my sewing machine and am even growing fond of the serger. And there are tons of creative things I could do that I haven't even thought of yet so, to tell the truth, I'm really content with my sewing room.

I saw some great denim white or black with the most colorful embroidered border, one was butterflies and flowers, one was high heel shoes and purses, one was cross stitch like. I really liked the butterfly/flower border and figured I should be able to do that with my machine, why buy it? But like you Dorothy, I have a list as long as my arm, in size 9 font to do plus get the garden in shape. I need to win a lottery so I can retire. I am going to attempt a mini border on my GD's pants with ladybugs and little yellow flowers, start small I figure, then build up from there.
