I will develop a new forum for children that sew.

As far as I know none of my sewing students have internet access at home, but I know several would enjoy their own forum if they could. Regardless, I think that is a nice idea.

My 7 year old dd Gracie made this doll dress today. It is her first time actually using the sewing machine herself and although she had a lot of help from mom we are going to consider this Gracie's first project. She did all the straight seams and corners herself but had a little help with the gathering and curves and hook and eye.

Gracie is very happy with how it turned out.

She wants to finish the other pieces of this outfit ie the pinafore and the bloomers. Then mom wants to tackle something a little more basic.

Anybody have any suggestions for curriculams or projects to teach sewing skills?

My sister (although a little older) made a really simple pair of pajama pants (almost all straight seams.) Also, a simple A-line dress might be fun - my sister's basic that I taught her, in order, was; a pillow - square, pajama pants, then a dress (a-line), then a little tote bag. Of course, she couldn't sew at all - seems like your little 7 year old might be beyond such a simple set of projects (curriculum?)

My girl has been helping me sew since she was about four so at seven is probably a little more advances then a pillow. But that sounds like a great progression.

We have finished the pinafore and bloomers to go with the dress. The out come looks great but it was quite challenging for her. I like the pj pant suggestion. Care to reccommend a pattern number. Aline dress might be good to.

Sherri, doll clothes are more difficult than clothes for herself with all the tiny seams. Just my humble opinion. What about a pair of simple shorts for herself?

I agree with Mary. Doll clothes can be a real bear.

I will look at the ones I have - I have 4 I think. I'm amking my sis do hers in fleece, just cuz its easy. How did you start teaching her? My 4 year old wants to learn but I'm the one that is unsure how to go about that. I'll get the pattern number(s) on here quick.

We started with her sitting on my lap steering whil I ran the foot pedal. Then you don't have to worry so much about speed. Just what ever I was sewing she was on my lap.

I learned to crochet, knit and sew (no TV) making dolls clothes, but I sewed them by hand during summer vacations. Short seams and certainly learn many stitches as well as how fabric behaves. I don't recall much assistance in this. I and my cousin also made our own patterns. They may have seemed primative when we were about 7 yrs old but I went on to become a life long sewer and my cousin a knitter and crocheter. This all occured at our summer cottage and our grandmothers (who were sisters and seamstresses) were around but I don't recall them ever sitting down with us. They simply demonstrated a short bit or answered questions. I learned to use a sewing machine while watching gram and recall being very startled at how fast it moved when I tried it on my own when no one was around and I was approx 9 years old. I was afraid of the needle, as I am now afraid of the blades on saws. I mastered the sewing machine, but have not done as well with a skil or radial saw!
I appreciate not everyone wants their children to be in danger with sewing equipment, but I credit these experiences with becoming a critical thinker and problem solver. :bolt:

Her first sewing project was sewing barbie hair to a peice of paper!! I had run outside and when I cam back in she was so proud of herself for what she had done. I laughed after I checked all her fingers for holes!! I let her "help every now and then, she is only 4 so I dont encourage her touching the machine without ALOT of help. We made a tote bag a few weeks ago together, it is all straight seams so it was easy for her. Really she just enjoys the time spent with mommy doing what ever and watching.

Our next project is ballet outfits!! :nc:
