Hi Everyone

I have a skirt that has WIDE high waist. It was my favirote back in the years while high waist was in fashion. I'd like to alter it into a low waist skirt because that's the look I prefer now, also becasue it's a bit tighter now due to the few inches added to my... uh... below the the waist area.

The skirt has generous darts below the waist I can let up. When I opened up the waist, I noticed the skirt edge was not finished. Before I have a serger, I would just sew it back up with the new waist. Now that I have a serger, I wonder if I should serge the finish knowing it's goign to hide inside the waist anyways?

Questions for everyone:

1. Do you normally finish the edge knowing it will be hidden in the waist? And would you tell me what advantage or disadv that will be?

2. The old waist is self fabric lined with fusible interface. I plan on expanding the waist with a wide contrast elastic along the two sides. Can I get by with that and what should I pay attention to?

I hope to finish this before high waist is back in fashion again. So any idea or tips you can share would be great.

Thanks :-)

Finishing an enclosed seam is optional. One of the advantages of finishing an enclosed waistband is that the band is reinforced by the stitching and less likely to ravel and tear away. However, the skirt has been used for a while and the fabric's integrity does not seem to be an issue. The negative is that it adds just a little more bulk to the seam and will make it more likely to show.

If you are going to put the elastic IN the waistband, I don't know if I would keep the interfacing in that part of the band. It will add bulk to the gathers and shouldn't look as nice. If it were me, I'd just trim it away and catch the interfacing in the same seam that you sew the elastic (vertically) down. If you are going to inset the elastic where it will show, I don't think there is a problem.

Hi Pam

The fabric was probably fine, before I opened up the seams. Now they're a bit raveled (butter fingers!). Based on your suggestion, I should probably serge the edge just to be safe.

I do plan on adding elastic exposed, with both ends encased in the old waist. So both of your scenrios kind of apply. I did not think of bulk when planning this. Now I will trim off the bit of interface where the new elastic will overlap the old waist.

Thanks for the tips :-)

Reasons not to finish the seams and edges--

1) too lazy
2) like to secretly know the nice clothes you are wearing look tacky on the inside.

Hmmm, about this 'dave' guy---I, too, have wondered! Why does HE have a smilie named after him?????

And about the 'excitement of your clothes falling off at any moment'.......I have a friend that this actually happened to with her first garment---her mom grabbed a folding cutting board, opened it and wrapped it around her as she hustled her outside to the car! This was in the late '50's--too bad I wasn't with her at that time, but EJ will NEVER live this one down! :dave: (yeah, I'll give it a 'dave' too, but ROFL one!)

Stephi & guppie...I may be wrong but I think the "dave" smilie is named after MaryW's son Dave. But the reason why he has that particular smilie...is before my time on SWN. Maybe Mary can fill us in...but it does look like something that a son would do... :bg:

We haven't heard from him in a while but sometimes Dave is a stinker.
He can't help it. He barely survived his mother's cooking.

That would make sense.

If I had an emoticon it would be doing the cabage patch dance and it would be the pretty blue colour of the love emoticon!!

Hey Hijackers, ya you! I read till the part about losing weight, then the rest just flew right by me. What are yall talking about?

Anyways I'm glad you gals are having a ball.

BTW My mom is still carrying an ID that has a 20 year old picture on it becasue , "I will take new pictures when I'm thin again". She calls it optimistic. We call it denial. I am much more practical. I let out the waist of my old skirts and pants, and tell people I'm still wearing the same size/clothes from 30 years ago.
