Good morning all, I have made new cushions for our patio furniture, and was wondering if any of you smart people have any ideas on how to make them waterproof. I used outdoor upholstery fabric which claims to be UV resistant, but had no claims about being waterproof. Is there something I could spray on the fabric?
Thanks, Joni :nc:

hey joni,

Not sure about sprays but when I repair my horses water proof blankets I take an unscented way candle to where I repaired them. It keeps the water from seaping through.

Just grab it and rub real hard, you will see where it has gone on. This might not be a good Idea for seat cushions though...Now that I am typing it, LOL.

But the wax will hold up in a light washing :-)

I love the smell of a stinky horse blanket!! :dave:

I am going to use Scotch Guard spray on mine. I just made a new cushion for my swing. the squirrel took all of the stuffing last fall for their nests. I went to put it on last night & it is about 1/2" too small. I am thinking about adding a strip of colored webbing or elastic (if I can find it to the small areas). I need to finish it by next week as we are having a party for DGSs First communion on the 6th.

here are a number of waterproofing products for fabrics, typically used in outerwear. You have to wash the item (do you have covers that zip off?) and then rewash with just water (no residue), and then spray with the product and put it through the dryer. Bingo, and pretty inexpensive.

Thanks Stephi, Barb, and Andrea. Great ideas. I think I will take a stroll through the camping department at Wally-World, and see what is available. I never even thought of that, I had just been looking in the sewing notions. Pretty limited. I thought they took ScotchGuard off the market. . .I will look for that too. Barb, I know what you mean about the pesky little squirrels. Here, they fight with the blue-jays over the sunflower seeds I put out. The deer chime in as well.

There are also water proof products to spray on tent seams. I'd try a sporting goods store/dept.
