Has anyone been using the plastic screen fabric that has been on the market recently? I have been having fun with a couple of pieces that I bought last year and finding it extremely nice to work with. So far I have made a big bag to take with me to the swimming pool, a tote for shopping, a zipper case for regular size Kleenex to carry in my purse, and a zippered pencil case for my grand daughter.

This stuff looks for all the world like kind of heavy window screen, and comes in a wide array of colors. It is kind of expensive but my daughter made herself a tote bag/purse last summer and has used it steady for almost a year and it is still going strong.

Now I am wondering what I can do with the leftovers? I suppose you could even applique on the stuff. Who knows?

Kay.

I didn't know it came in colors! For anyone who actually needs black, it might pay to comparison shop at the hardware store where it is cold in a roll. It's the one labeled for homes with pets b/c it's scratch/claw resistant.
If you need to make totes, it's good instead of plastic canvas for the bottom layer to give it sturdiness (where some patterns call for a piece of cardboard that will disintegrate when you wash it). In fashion colors it could have tons of uses, and would be fun to hand-embroider on--picture frames/matting, maybe a food-protector for the picnic table, it would make a sturdy sweater-stacker to hang in a closet (usually seen in canvas) or even good used as part of a hamper. It would be good as an over-door shoe organizer too. I'm picturing an envelope-shaped "bag" to protect a book that might get carried outdoors (maybe for bridal shower guests to sign and add recipes to...). I have sewn with it by hand (a big pain), and then in desperation tried on my machine, and I was surprised to find that it didn't kill the machine at all! Use a tough needle and take it slowly, but it works just fine. I sewed velcro onto mine to make a cover for a sandbox.

Plastic screens! I always have some in the garage for fixing screens, but never thought of using it for craft or sewing. What a great idea!

Thanks for sharing!

I just made a tote bag for my mom for Mother's Day, to carry her towel, bathing suit etc back & forth from her aquafit classes but I got mine at the hardware store (cheap), had no idea it came in colours. I didn't know if it would be very strong but its something different for her, anyway. Wish I had appliqued on it before I put it together, maybe I will try some hand embroidery to snazz it up. You gals/guys have such creative minds!

Our ASG chapter made screen tote bags and machine embroidered them to sell at a craft fair. They are great sewn on the serger as there are not any raw edges. We added fabric tops and handles and embroidered different designs on the side. Easy, peasy and great for beach bags.
Happy Stitching!

I bet, with the size of the weave of plastic screens, embroidery projects would look really nice done with satin ribbons. You now, those spools of 1/4 inch satin ribbon that come in all different colors. I'm picturing daisies, etc... Nothing fussy, and handwork made fast with ribbon.
