I have been asked to provide a quote for some work and I'd really appreciate your input! I have a company who would like me to make 200 lunch sacks. The lady who gave me the referral owns a home decor sewing business and will get me the fabric at wholesale, which she recommends marking up (basically doubling it). I found a pretty simple pattern for it.... They would also like a quote on sewing on a small patch to approx. 156 shirts. Any suggestions? TIA Kim

You must take into consideration the price of thread, your time which is quite valuable and yes, add in the retail price of the fabric. Don't underestimate. Patches are usually easy, but you have to count in your time. Make some up to time yourself and figure out the easiest method of construction. MaryW

Maybe they could pay for the materials and then you could charge them 'by the hour' for the sewing, etc. Ronda Bernina Aurora 440QE

That sounds good. I wanted to come up with a unit price though - I think she already got another quote and I think it's easier for people to compare.

My other dilemma is what type of fabric to use for the bags. Any suggestions on that?

I would think something sturdy like outerwear. Nylon, canvas, something that stands up to the wear and tear with kids.

Oh well, so much for that. I think she was expecting them to be about $3 or $4, but the fabric alone was going to be that!

Well, hmm. How big are these lunch bags?

Just a standard size, Mary, but I was pricing out decent fabric since they are used on tours for adults. I priced the fabric at Textile Outfitters and at the local shop in town here. I may have been able to find cheaper fabric if I shopped around Calgary (1 hour away), but I think the labour alone would have put the price too high for her. I don't think it would have been unreasonable to charge $3-4 per bag to include cutting, sewing, thread (not the material). Do you? I am not sure who made them for her before, but she must have been working for free Kim

Actually - markup is usually 2.5 times whatever it cost you to make it so the price you listed is not outreageous especially because you're not including your "time". She'll probably want to upsell them anyway (so she'll add to your markup) so the only reason she'd be upset is that then she has to sell them higher. But fabric is expensive unless you use poorly made fabric and we all know that's NOT an option. I think you're being completely reasonable. Sounds like a great oppurtunity too. |

Well, like I said, she didn't go ahead with it, but at least she has my number for future reference. I would rather do without the job, than work for next to nothing. Especially since it is a side business for me. Sure would've been a good job though!
