I was given a Kenmore model 148.531. It's a heavy S.O.B. in a cabinet, avacado green. It seems to sew amazingly well. So, I really want a manual. For the life of me, I can't find one, nor find anything about this machine. I called the Sears hotline - what a joke. I googled "148.531" and every variation thereof with no luck.

Can anyone help me on the road to finding out more about my machine - specifically, a manual?

I know there is a site: www.sewusa.com that specializes in sewing machine manuals and threading instructions. There may be others, and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help. Have you checked there yet?

Good luck with your machine!

Peggy - sewusa.com didn't have the manual, but I emailed them asking if they could help me. Pam, eBay didn't either, but had a lot of "similar" !
manuals. I will keep checking there until I get what I'm after!

Thanks for your help, ladies. Anyone else know where to find hard-to-get manuals?

It'll show up. They are on there quite often. I've been watching for a particular Kenmore machine to replace my old one but I don't want to pay too much...they come through pretty often...just not the condition/price I want to pay. I've seen a lot of that one and the manuals too. Most people seem to be buying the "whole package" and then just reselling everything in pieces. I have everything but Sears broke my machine. I'd like to have the machine replaced. I'd buy a broken one for the part but I don't think that it can be replaced..I think it is a major portion of the "inner works".

I know people do get older manuals on line. Have you tried Sew4less? They do have parts and manual for older model machines.

Blackie, I emailed these guys: www.sewconsult.com/id23.htm and they said they have your manual.

They list 148.530, but I emailed them with your number and they said they have it.

Good luck!

Don't know if you're still looking for info on your machine. I belong to a yahoo group for vintage kenmore machines, It has been an invaluable help to me in getting my two vintage kennies running top notch. There are tons of files on the site and usually someone will have what you're looking for. I've been able to get the manuals for both of mine and the cams for my machine at a very reasonable price!

Can you let me know the name of this group? I also have several older Kenmores and appreciate some fine tuning advise.
Thanks

I know you already got what you needed but I have used this site before and it is also a great one to find old manuals and even tho it is a singer site...they have others available! Just in case there's someone else out there looking and haven't found what they need yet...maybe this would be a helpful link! Glad you found yours!!!

I have a #27 Singer Treadle machine and would like to purchase needles and bobbins for it. Does anyone know where I can get them? I have tried regular Singer needles but they won't pick up the bobbin thread. I have one needle but it is really old and when I try to sew with it it skips stitches.

They list bobbins here for the #27:

They also list needles, but don't specify what machine they're for. You could check to see if they fit yours.

The 27 uses the standard 15X1/705 needles. Flat side to the right, hand wheel rotates toward the operator. If it doesn't work this way, check your threading.

If you love your Singer, consider joining the Vintage Singers Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagesingers/). The vast amounts of knowledge and the response time very fast! Plus there are people there that have access to ANY part you could want.

Bill said it.. Needle insertion is "Flat side to the right" ... Ask me how I know.. LOL I had not replaced a needle in my singer in years because I had not used it.. Someone else had it.. I put in a new needle and then thought They had broken my machine... Luckily , I remembered the next day.. and remedied the problem...
