OK, I've challenged myself out of pride and the inability to say "No, I can't do that." There, I've confessed.
Now, here is the request. I am to make a "banner" for someone's wedding. The banner is of thick satin, 36" wide by about 48" long to be hung on a rod above the reception entry door. It is to be embroidered with the groom and bride's names at the top, the father and mother of the groom's name at the bottom and their last name's first initial (W) in the middle with the wedding date in an arc over the top of the "W" and the year the parents were married and the year the new groom and bride are married in an arc below the "W". The new couple are getting married on the same date the groom's parents were married on.
HOW DO I stabilize this??? I've experimented with several kinds cutaway, tearaway, iron on. I was going to try to use my GHIA 12"hoop, but I've managed fewer mistakes in the test outs with the regular 4" hoop and doing the letters individually. I am using sticky stabilizer either way so I won't hoop burn the satin. PLEASE suggest anything I can do to avoid problems with this satin and large project!

I've used rayon velvet to make embroidered banners for the church. I also used good weight bridal satin for my daughter's train. In both cases I used the Giant hoop it all (12X23) for the hoop. The nature of the hoop (no upper piece) demands a self stick stabilizer and the hoopless method. The stabilizer I used was called Stabil-stick tear away. In the case of the GHIA, you stick the stabilizer on the bottom of the hoop and then you stick your fabric on the top. It is a bit like working with fly paper. It works very well for these types of projects. However, the nature of both fabrics, coupled with the weight of the rest of the project absolutely DEMANDS that you pin around the edges to make sure that it doesn't come loose. The weight and motion of the fabric is more than enough to pull it loose from the hoop. In order to assure that I didn't have holes showing in my project, I used IBC glass head (xtra fine point) pins to make sure that I didn't marr the satin or smash the velvet. These pins are so fine that they fall out of "normal" fabrics but work for special fabrics esp. with satin.

Pam? Do you happen to belong to SewForum? I just got nearly the same reply there! If you are, that's pretty funny! If you aren't, what a coincidence!
I know how to use the GHIA, but there are 39 letters + and in the test stitchouts I managed to get better alignment when I made each letter an idividual file and just "hooped" (not really, sat it down on the sticky stabilizer-what do you call doing that??) and them individually. It was more tedious but my focus was better and my machine seems to bog down sometimes with the GHIA. Its getting old I guess?? Anyway, I've seen the glass head beads at WalMart (one of two places in town where we can buy anything.) do you know if they are "good" enough for this?

Yes I do and I thought I was loosing my mind. My dgd's dad came in to see her as I was finishing up the posting. I came in, signed on in the sewing room and the post wasn't there. I'm so glad that I'm only half crazy...ok, Dorothy, where are you?.... I post there under a different name because I couldn't log on in my "regular" name.

If you are talking about the pins, I'd wait for them. There are a few times when I've been unable to buy my good pins (I spend a lot on regular and my special pins), so I've purchased the standard brands. You can just tell a difference when they enter the fabric and they make a much bigger mark. I couldn't believe after years of using my regular pins and I used a major brand's pins. I could instantly feel the difference. I could feel the friction in the fabric (now, isn't that just weird).

Whew! I'm glad I'm not losing my mind! I'm on SewForum, too, and saw the thread about this. It's not the first time I've seen similar posts, though. I guess we just love all the sewing/embroidery forums! LOL

Well, I'll be darned! Paroper and Berninababe are one and the same!! I should have known. I have been so impressed with the knowledge both of you possess and are so willing to share on these forums. I never put it together that you were the same person. Keep up the good work, Pam. I learn so much from you.

You are too kind. I usually use paroper. The problem was that when I tried to log on to the other forum I couldn't use that ID...I had a hard time coming up with a new one. I'm not all that creative. There are a couple of other places where I use Berninababe.
