I am working on 7 bird costumes for my dd's Alice in Wonderland production (grade 3/4). I've made the hoods with beaks, and tunics, but we can't come up with any ideas for easy legs. I don't think feet will be done as they are not dancing, but singing only.

I am getting tired of working on these (of course everyone was 'too busy' to help, and I guess I'm not please note my sarcasm  ), so I am looking for something simple. We do have a few meters of yellow, somewhat stretchy fabric to use as well as a bit of felt. Tights are out of the question since we live in a small town and the only store here does not have them!

Thanks!

Can you attach a length of fabric on the tunic to cover each leg-you could just do the front and have it secure with velcro or elastic if no one will see the back, or do one on front and back and use velcro on the sides? Something simple and quick for you. You are a marvel doing all that work!

Why not just colored tights for the legs? either yellow or green or brown? Just an idea?

What if you just sewed the material in leg strips to the costumes top and cut feet at the bottom that could tie around the shoes. Did that make sence??

Cut a strip as long as thier legs and at one end of each just cut a foot patternthat will sit over thier shoes. Then a quick stich of ribbon on either side of the foot will tie them on so when the do walk out they move with thier feet. Have them all wear black pants??

In my head I see a picture, can I fax it to you?? LOL!!

Thanks for your ideas. Thanks for the pat on the back Lyn! I am happy to help out, but just wasn't expecting it to be full time work

I am going to call the one other mom that took over two of the nine costumes for me and see what she thinks. I think my expectations are too high as to how the costumes look. I am use to just making two costumes for my 2 dd's at halloween - and they can usually be reused for dress up play. I have to remember that a) no one is going to really see these costumes up close, and b) they will only be used for 2 nights!

Any other suggestions will still be taken!

I believe in taking the easy way out. I'd go for the stretch pants, tights or whatever. If you decide you want feet, I'd do some spats in felt and attach a little bright (yellow) pointed toes to it....that's be pretty easy.

I would love to just do black stretch pants, but the lady heading this up really wants something bright on the legs - and as I said in my first post, we can't purchase them. If I had the time I would make some yellow capris, but I don't think I will have time....

Well, the lady doing it isn't doing it. I think that if you look you could find yellow tights. I'm with Sher.

I tell you what would be really cute! Put them in long yellow shorts and bright striped knee socks! It would be a killer!!!!

It would remind me of our Nanday Conure!

only their socks are red!

Oh boy! This will sound too easy. So much so, you're knee might jerk and make you say no right away. Get plain (yellow's fine, or whatever they have at the cheapest store) shorts, and bare legs. Put them all in flip flops. All those bare little legs will be cute and there might even be some chicken legs in the bunch. Less is more. Especially up on stage.

Thanks again for the additional suggestions. The only problem with buying clothing is that the school's budget is next to nothing, and one of the organizers already purchased the yellow fabric.

Now that I look at it, I am tempted to just whip up 5 pairs of long shorts. The two owls can get away with black tights anyhow. I am a sucker for punishment, but I don't like to take on a job and then not go all the way with it. I figure I can put a little elastic in the waist and just cut the bottom of the leg part jaggedy. Then I can at least be proud when I see them up on stage!

Can't you just make leggings with elastic at the top and the bottom?
Am I the only one old enough to remember leggings?

I'm not sure that I have enought fabric to make 5 pairs of leggings. I think it would be faster for cutting and sewing if they were only knee length.

Ah, they need to learn to have fun with it. The parents will LOVE thier kids on the stage no matter what they are wearing and it'll look really cute.

I made a pair of the shorts on Friday - it actually took no time at all. I brought it over to the school to have the kids try them on before making the rest. They worked really well! I also had them try on the rest of the costume too. It was so exciting for them (and me!), and the most rewarding part of this whole experience is that most of the kids thanked me for making their costumes and told me they really liked them! That made it all worthwhile :dave:

I will post a picture once I have one!
