I"m making the "lapkins (http://www.sewnews.com/resources/library/0506party/index5.html)" from the Sew News May 06 issue for my M-I-L. I'm doing a water-melon themed party for her to throw. I've gotten some traditional picnic type games: horseshoes, I'm going to make ties for a 3-legged race, and maybe even sacks for a potato sack race. I've got the disposable plates and silverware and some miscellanious decorations.

My questions is, does anyone have any other ideas I could throw in there? I was thinking of maybe putting in a recipe for a special cake or maybe some food suggestions or games, preferrably suggestions I can put together from stuff I have at home.

Ticia, who really shouldn't come up with so many ideas like this.

Great idea! I really like the bread bowl from that same web page, and the fact that it can be made to coordinate with the lapkins too. Are you doing that? Other items...you might not have water balloons lying around the house, but could prob find them for less than $2 at the grocery store. Ditto for bamboo skewer--so cheap. Ditto for citronella candles, or something else that does the same job? I'd toss in a few recipes of easy make-ahead pot-luckable dishes. You can write them on cards and tie them in a pack with a ribbon. Maybe include one card with a fun summer coctail or a favorite punch recipe. People always ooh and ahh over my broccoli salad, given to me by a good friend (kind of like cole slaw but w/ broccoli). I'll share. :) This would be a great gift idea for a bridal shower too! (I have one to attend soon--might steal your idea!!) Does your MIL have grandchildren/little kids in the family? Maybe a bean-bag toss game. It's easy for the little ones to do, and you have rice and fabric scraps to make little pouches. I'd do at least four--2 in two different colors. The targets could be a sand pail, planter, plastic bowl, or whatever she has on hand at the party. Fun!

Watermelon shaped bean bags!! Maybe a watermelon shaped cake...Cook in a circular pan and cut in half them decorate like a watermelon. Just food dye betty crocker Icing. I would use red velvet cake or a red spice cake mix for it so it is deep red when you cut into it, and add a little cinamon to the icing to add to the spiced flavor.
Have a watermelon rolling contest, you can use real watermelons or eggs you have colered green (easter just passed you can find on sale dye kits). Roll the eggs with spoons, or even more fun...Your nose!!!

I love these ideas. I knew I was right in posting here to get extra ideas. She has two grandchildren living in town with her, and then has made friends with all of her neighbors who have young children. So, she will definetely have kids at something like this.
Please post your broccoli cole slaw recipe. If nothing else, my husband will probably love it!

I really like the basket liners. I have several baskets, some of which came with liners and I've been thinking I'd make some to change out every once in a while. The same one's get a bit boring.
