This is related to sewing for children so I'll post it here. It's not about something I have made but something that was made for me that was a surprise!
I had mentioned at work that I wanted to make (and am in the process of making now) a 2-piece rhumba outfit for my daughter. We have a pediatrician who sews, knits and crochets for her children. Her daughter is a bit older than my youngest. Anyway, she just got back from Afghanistan and is working with us now during the day. So--when she doesn't have pediatric patients to see, she crochets. She brought some new yarn and had begun a project so I asked her what she was making. She told me she thought it was going to be a little dress for her daughter but for me to ask her in a few days. Last week, she called me back to her office and showed me this ADORABLE little rhumba style top she'd crocheted and asked me if that was what I was talking about that I wanted for Sarah and I told her yes. It's a sweet combination of pastel colors. She said "well, I have to finish the little skirt and then I'll be done and your daughter can wear it for her birthday party" (which is tomorrow.) I was SHOCKED! She worked on the skirt over the next days and it is just as beautiful as the top. She called me at home on Wed to say that she had finished it and would leave it for me to pick up Thursday as she was going on leave for a couple of days. So yesterday I got the outfit and she had not only done the top and skirt, she made a little hat (beret style) to match.
I am gonna post a picture when I can get it made and downloaded.
Trust me when I say that I cannot even begin to know how to crochet or knit. I think it's an art and not one that I think I'd be very good at but this outfit is phenomenal.
Sarah has a couple of other items that someone knitted for her and now this crocheted item and all of these items will forever be special to me and I will always treasure--she also has 2 blankets that her Grandma Nan crocheted for her as well that will be hers for her babies one day...
Anyway, I'll let you guys know when I get the picture posted...I would love to have this much talent when it comes to yarn!

What a special treat for you and your daughter! Isn't it such a warm feeling when someone takes their valuable time and makes something for you, and then as a surprise at that. I'm smiling just reading your post.

I just love the two crocheted blankets that where made for my daughter!!!

I have seen an outfit on ebay that was a sewn top and pants with crocheted ruffles on the legs and bottom of the shirt. It was very cute and a great Idea. Maybe you can get together with her on your next project, LOL!!!

You know, I watched her while she was crocheting and it looked very relaxing. I just don't know that it's my thing. I think it's very beautiful. I don't know. She told me some supplies to gather if I wanted to learn. My MIL crochets and she has told me several times she would teach me but I haven't had the opportunity to actually sit down with her long enough to learn. We're going out there to AZ next month so maybe...
I was wrong also in saying that this doc just returned from Afghanistan--it was actually Iraq. She took her sewing machine there and would get the kids measurements from her husband and send items back to the states for them. One of my co-workers is now in Afghanistan so I guess I had that on my brain when I typed that post.. I still need to sew a couple of buttons on the straps but that's all she left for me to do. She didn't get a chance to do that. The little hat is just precious. I need to get that photo made!

What a great surprise! Can't wait to see the outfit. I crochet once in awhile but a lot of my crocheting used to be done when I was married and I would crochet in the car but now that I'm the one who has to drive....... It si relaxing and can be done easily while watching tv, etc. Try it Julie, you'll enjoy it!

OK, here's the outfit. It's sorta hard to tell in the phot but the little top has straps that come over the shoulders from the back. I just have to add a button to each side...

How pretty.
Is you daughter the type to wear all that white well? Either one of mine would have it looking tie-dyed with juice in no time.
I still have a tiny dress tucked away in one of my drawers that both of my girls wore when they were about 2 or 3.
I used to crochet a lot. Then I started needlepoint and cross stitch. A few months ago I was looking at all the fantastic new yarns and decided to whip up a quick shawl. It was so much fun I'm ready to start a new project.
It is really easy. I'm sure you could pick it up fast.
It is relaxing because you don't have to think much, except to count.
I used to make a lot of lace, but I don't want to have to strain my eyes.

that is adorable! I learned to crochet when I was 10yo or so from my great grandmother. I find it very relaxing. I recently learned to knit, but don't have it down pat yet so it kinda stresses me out too much LOL! I make mostly baby blankets. I did make the bodice of a dress out of crochet then sewed on a gathered fabric skirt. I love the dress and plan to make another one soon hopefully! It was pretty easy.
