I bought a skirt from Lerner that had a petticoat type layer with it, and part of the petticoat is made of the attached material in photo. It is very very soft, it isn't itchy and definitely isn't tulle. What in the world is it?

(ps, it is really strange for a forum this size that there isn't healthy upload images limits, it makes it really hard to post examples, just a suggestion)

Hi Xena, Warrior Princess. Mistress of the Art of Sewing!

I have no idea what your fabric is but if you click on the little yellow postcard icon above the message box that you type your post in, it will give you a place to paste your off-site URL which will then show in the post itself.
I believe too many pictures on site make this very expensive for Mary(our great leader) so many of us have our own web photosites that we can link to to show our work. Or link to your own web page and that will work as well. like this....(some bags I made)http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/091844d8.jpg

Did you use the [img] tag? Thanks for the tips. I even went to Joanne's with the skirt and they didn't know what the fabric is.

I know about expense in hosting images, I own a fairly large forum myself and our server fees are about $250 month.

I haven't seen it before. From the picture I'm not even sure that it is what we would normally term "fabric". Many years ago the commercial companies were using non-woven interfacing/paper looking stuff for stiffening skirts AGES before we had non-woven interfacing in the market place. This may be one of those "premier" fabrics...and to me it almost looks like something non-woven (not sure).

yeah I agree I am not entirely sure it would be correctly called Baffert either. It is some kind of net gain but it is way softer than what we would normally think of as netting. One person guessed that it was mosquito netting but the "holes" are larger than mosquito netting and the fabric is sturdier. A gal at work is suggested that it might be that white material that is placed on the inside of the men's bathing suits. Any idea where I could get something like that?

I was thinking along the same lines. I thought of outerwear fabrics. Some wind/raincoats have a lining that looks a lot like that. It adds a lightweight layer, which can be good for building up some empty space between the wearer and the outer garment. A "better" fabric store will have an outerwear section where you could look for it, or something a lot like it.

Most of what I have seen in men't bathing suits is like sports mesh. There are different "hole sizes" depending upon brand of sport clothing and what kind of sport it was made for. Once in a while you'll see it in fabric shops. Every so often Wal Mart will have bolts of it for sale on the dollar table as over run fabric.

The stuff at walmart though (that I have seen) is not soft like this is, this is as soft as cotton. The typical sports mesh is kinda plasticy.

You can buy it on-line at http://www.justmakeit.com. Textile Outfitters is based out of Calgary and you can shop in their store, order by mail, fax or on-line. Good quality material as I have bought from them.

Does it feel kind of felty? I think I've seen it but I just can't remember where.
Not much help am I? I think I've seen things wraped in it.

yes, Libby, that's the same stuff I was thinking of. It's an oddball fabric--used in a number of ways in fashion and utility pieces, but I've never seen it for sale on a bolt!

I actually found some old curtains on ebay that look like they were made of this stuff, and they were much cheaper than springing for the fabric, so I bought them to cut up to see if they would work since this is for the hem of an petticoat.

I have foldable 2 tote bags that were freebies when I purchased something else that seem to be made of this, so it can't be expensive. From the feel of the fabric (and the look of yours) it seems to be made of a cotton or cotton/ rayon type of fibre and pressed, not woven. I initially thought it would tear easily, but doesn't seem to. I have never seen it in fabric bolts, but if anyone does please let me know as I can think of a number of uses. The sports fleeces and webbing, I believe are made of nylon and have a looser weave with larger holes.

When I looked again, I thought of the curtain fabric I had bought at Walmart for 1.97/meter. It looked the same as what you had shown. Hope the curtains work for you.
