I bought a new Simplicity Pattern a few weeks ago, dusted off my old White Classic Sewing Machine (which is basically good for learning only, as I disovered).

I'm 3/5th into finishing the garment, and I find a mistake. The notches all lined up, the curve of the crotch line all matches, but back inside seam was over two inches off!

What did I do wrong? Could it be a pattern error? The pants are done - they fit great after making the adjustment manually.

Has anyone else encountered Simplicity patterns with errors? I'm not a beginner, but I'm not an expert. My mother is a seamstress, so I have a great "HELP! fix this please" person when needed.

Mom told me Simplicity patterns were harder than most others. Anyone else think so?

My Mothers Day wish is for a new Singer 7642. I've tried it, and liked the test drive. If anyone has this machine, comments would be great. I want a good machine for garment and home decorating sewing only. A few extras are nice too. I am not embroidering, or quilting. The electronic settings are really nice, always get the same stitch - every time, but I want to stay within my budget. My Mom has a Singer and a Kenmore, she offered me the Kenmore, but I want a Singer, lol.

Thanks Everyone!

I'm notorius for not getting my seams to line up even when I really carefully cut out the patterns to size, really ticks me off cause I'm not sure why, so I end up making adjustments. The only one that has ever worked exactly for me was the vintage jumper from www.sewinggarden.com, and who know's why that one was different!! Sometimes it just a 1/4 inch but sometimes I'm out 2 inches like you were.

It sounds like the mchine didn't feed the top and the bottom fabric through at the same rate. That can be a problem with stretch fabric esp. If you have a pressure foot adjustment, you may need to adjust it. You might notice this more in the front and back because of the bias cuts in the crotch area. THat is true if the center back seam didn't match up. Sometimes though the back wraps over the front waistband and it can be a couple of inches (or more) longer than the front.

Whenever things don't fit together right I always think it is the way I cut it --not the pattern.
I haven't really haven't had that kind of problem for a few years, since I started cutting with the rotary cutter.

Two inches is quite a bit. I would think it is maybe a cutting error. We have all had this happen to us, can you tell. LOL. :bg:

I have had a pattern go wrong on me -- for the red dress I made a while back, the bust darts and princess seams did not line up at all! They were off by about 1/2" on both sides. In the picture it looked like they should line up perfectly. I went back and looked at the pattern pieces, and sure enough, they did not line up there either. Go figure. It's not a big deal, but it still bugs me. And then I cut the lining too small, but that was totally my fault. :whacky: I think I may remake the top anyway, because it didn't fit quite right and the neckline turned out weird. :) Anyway, yeah, we've all been there. I'm more of a beginner -- go figure the first dress I try to make has a mistake like that. Oh well.

You'd better believe we've all been there...and the longer we've sewn (probably) the stranger things we have done/seen. One thing I have found though is that the pattern companies don't always design things the way that we think they should look. For instance, sometimes the bust dart can come up from above or below the bustline...not the middle. To us it would look weird but the designers sometimes do things like that. It might make perfect sense to them because the sloper they started with may have had that type of dart and they just added the princess lines to the side of it, didn't bother to move the dart.

Darn if that isnt the most annoying thing to have happen. I pin all my patterns real well when cutting them out and I just had my machine cleaned and tuned up abd it still happens on occasion. It can make a big difference when working with New born size clothing too.

I think it is just one of those things that all us sewers experience!!

I appreciate the feedback.

I did check my cutting - and it wasn't off. Who knows! At least the pants fit nice, and all seems well!

Thanks all!

I always say half the fun of sewing is the challenge of making things work when they don't go right.
The other half is when everything goes right and just falls together.
The third half is finding just the right fabric for a project or just the right project for fabric that was right for something you never got around to.

That's called "new math". I like that third half business.

I always say half the fun of sewing is the challenge of making things work when they don't go right.

Amen to this - I have a lovely professional picture of my daughter taken when she was 7 years old. She is in a velvet jumper heavily embroidered on the front. I keep it close to my sewing area to keep me humble. It was a Vogue pattern that was lined and then turned. Somehow or other, following the instructions carefully I managed to turn the bodice into one of those mobius strips. I spent a whole night going round and round and round trying to figure it out before I just cut a hole in the lining to so I could press and continue!!

I have a terrible headache today and I can't recall today how to start a new topic so maybe someone can move my question to a new topic. The question is: Does anyone use a croquis as described in many places but currently in Threads page 52? Is it worth the effort to make one up?

:dave: I am old school math too. My son brings home the "new" math, sometimes I have no clue, and I love math!

Yes! The pattern could definitely be the problem. As a matter of fact, I think the latest Threads magazine has an article called "proofing the pattern" where you measure all the seamlines to see if they match up!!

Well, most of us don't want to take this extra step, unless we're planning to cut into 4-ply siik (!), but don't automatically think it's you. Over on patternreview.com, they analyze each pattern and there are plenty of drafting errors.
