I am working on a lined jacket and have noticed the sleeve is a very wide sleeve which I really am not liking. How do I make the sleeve narrower? And whats an armskye (?) or however you spell it????

That is the curve under the arm.

You can fold up the extra in the top portion of the sleeve and take it out. If it is a gathered sleeve head, you can remove from both sides of the center (equal amounts) and it will work very well. If you are just removing gathered fabric, you may not have to take out much. If the sleeve is a full gathered sleeve at the top, the sleeve head will also have to be cut down heightwise. It would be a good idea to test your pattern before you make it to make sure it will fit. If you are just taking in at the top but the bottom is right, cut and overlap the fullness. The pattern may have to be adjusted if the sleeve is a fitted sleeve without gathers and the shape of the armscye (I can't spell it either) needs to remain the same, even if you have to remove fabric under the arm.

Pam, its a really basic sleeve, no gathers at the top, but just very wide in the arm right down to the wrist. I will try some of your tips to see how it works on a test piece!! Thanks. L

You may need to raise the underarm to compensate for the decreast in sleeve size then. It really depends on the pattern. You really have several options, depending upon how you want to approach it. The armhole itself has to be just the opposite of the sleeve at the seamline with the exception of the gathered sleeve head (which is not a contender in this case). The differences are in the fact that they curve different directions. The purpose of easing the sleeve head is not to make something larger fit something smaller, it is to make one shape fit the other...took me a long time to realize that. However, if the sleeve is properly drafted and the insertion is correct, it is just a matter of changing one curve to fit the other and putting the sleeve together.
