I am making #15 from Ottobre 4/2004 (corduroy pants) and I am having TONS of trouble with the fly-front. It seems like the pattern's fly front was incorrect on the pattern sheet, which isn't like Ottobre (I've checked twice). If anyone could help me figure out how to fix it, I'd be eternally greatful.

This is the front fly area. Both sides are identical. I have zig-zag finished the raw edges of the fly:

To reiterate, these are the two fronts, right-sides out facing the camera:

This is how the instructions indicate to assemble. If I had pieces that looked like this, I could do it. I have the fly shield piece and am not confused about that. However, both pieces I have look like the "shallower" cut (where my finger is pointing). There were no lines I could see on the pattern sheet to draw a self-facing!

This is me saying, "WTF?" and asking the Goddesses of S-W-N to advise:

What did I do wrong? I double-checked the pattern sheet. What should I do? Can I sew a makeshift facing to the right side of the fly? How big should it be? The pants are almost ENTIRELY ASSEMBLED and I can't bear to start from scratch.

Blackie what I would do...
would be to cut the larger fly facing and sew it to the front piece along that white fold line I can see on the pattern, once the pants are together only YOU would know what that teeny seam (which would likely blend beautifully into your stripe) would be. You likely could also disguise it with some topstitching but I bet you wouldn't need it once the pants were all together and on a moving child.

good luck

That's what I was thinking. Aren't these little challenges fun?

I LOVE your pictures! I'd like to jump in on this one but I've never used that brand pattern and I can't quite make out the instructions. I'd sure like to get my hands on it....and I imagine that you'd like to get your hands on them about now... Although I sometimes make the fly-style zipper, I am not sure that my directions in this case would be correct. Can you e-mail the pattern company directly? In some cases with US pattern companies you can...that might be your best bet (and hope that they can read English.)

Pam, great ideas. I am loathe to email or call since they are Finnish and I am not that great of a seamstress (and relatively new to fly applications) so I think we would be lost in translation.

So ladies - I started with the intention of using the method mommydione suggested. But then I started feeling like maybe I could just use the pieces as-is with the small "facings" on the pieces, even if they didn't look right to me (i.e. too small, and no curved bottom).

So I used the instructions here on this fabulous video tip from Taunton Press (http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/tvt008.asp). This method is simply amazing. Very simple, and I got great results. As far as I can tell, you really need to have that facing extend 1 3/8" from the center line. I was less than 1/4" shy of that, and I barely made it. That said, it's a great method.

P.S. I put the zipper in backwards and had to take the whole thing all the way out. Luckily I am not my old impulsive self who would have swore, cried, and thrown the pants across the room in a huff!

Here's my fly:

I'm so glad you got it in alright. With good directions they generally aren't that bad. Also, the depth of the fly varies just like the width of a tie (from season to season.)

I think you are right, that with good directions they aren't too bad. But when you have to "wing it", it is confusing.

I wish I could do the "fly math" and anticipate how to make sure it lies flat at the end, etc... It's kind of a mystery to me. I guess I will get better with practice.

I don't think Blackie made any mistakes. It is one of those times when you have to know when to make do or wing it. Things just don't always work out the way they should. Yup, you can read her mind with those pics.
