Earlier this week Mary mentioned in her Canadian Sewing news letter that she was waiting for the tulips to flower. I thought I would post a few pictures that I took on Wednesday of the tulips (http://www.flickr.com/photos/heyjudee/sets/72057594133114958/) that are in full bloom here in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Tulip Festival always starts the first weekend of May and goes through to the Victoria Day long weekend. They always hope the weather co-operates and this year it is exceptional and they are blooming a long time.

Sometimes I think we got better than the Dutch, but I guess human life is the best. I also love tulips and am always playing around with tulip themes for quilting and sewing, planning - not necessarily following thro.

Do you know if these are deadheaded and what happens to them when they are past their prime? Can you tell I am a gardner who gets frustrated with tulip leaves into July?

ahhhhh Judy, wonderful!

I love tulips they are my favourite flower. You have taken some beautiful photos. They are a little hard to grow here in Western Australia but is is possible. We have a beautiful display every year in a lovely national park in July.

I had them for my bridal bouquet when i got married....it was October and I was lucky to get the last of them at the time. Well, it ended up being the hottest October in 17 Years about 38 oC or about a 100 in your language.

needless to say they did not like the heat
They boys had to empty out the drinks esky so we could put the tulips on ice and revive them a bit!!!

Once again, beautiful photos..........

Judy.....

Many years ago......around 1990.....we were in Ottawa for Mother's Day to watch my husband run the Ottawa Marathon. The course ran along the canals and the sight was spectacular with the tulips in bloom. The architecture of the city as a backdrop also made it a very memorable weekend. My husband wants to know if they still have the race? Thanks for posting the pictures.

Beautiful photos Judy - I especially like the one (image 1143) where the yellow and red ones are translucent with the sun behind the petals. Dead-headed all mine last week and plaited up the daffodil greens - they take SOO long to die back!

Glad everyone appreciated my photos....now to answer some of your questions....

Jan...that is my favourite too.

Patty...yes they still have the Ottawa Marathon. This year it is on May 28th. Here is the link to the web-site. Your husband can check it out. http://www.ncm.ca/
When searching for the marathon site, I came across another marathon that will be held in October on our Thanksgiving weekend. So here's that link that he can check out too. http://www.somersault.ca/3oct9.html

Nancy...What happens to the tulips? Well all the bulbs are dug up and given away every year. There is a day, that is announced to the public, and anyone can go to City Hall, wait in line and get some of the bulbs.

Dorothy...As to the quantity of tulips...every year Ottawa gets 50,000 tulips donated from Holland. The reason is that during the WWII the Dutch royal family came to live in Ottawa. Queen Julianna was born in the Ottawa Hospital...but they declared the hospital room as Dutch territory so that she would be a Dutch citizen. Ever since Ottawa has been getting the tulip donation. I don't know what will happen re the tulips when Queen Julianna passes on...

But we all enjoy them while we can!
