A friend of mine (who works at JoAnns) came over last night to drop off some fabric - I am going to make some crib sheets for her new grandson who is expected to arrive in about a week.

She said that JoAnns accepts all Michaels and J.C. Moore coupons - I was a bit shocked because I thought she was kidding. She said that customers must know because they use them.

Did any of you know this? Where have I been?

I'm not surprised. I know Michaels and A C Moore will each accept each others coupons -- my daughter does that all the time. Hancocks accepts JoAnn's coupons for cut items (again I learned from my daughter who is a real coupon clipper).
Half the time I forget to bring the JoAnns' coupons to JoAnns or the Hancocks' to Hancocks.
I am terrible when it comes to money. I don't buy a lot of stuff but I don't try to get the best deal when I do buy stuff. It's a flaw I should work on I guess.

Michaels will accept Joann's coupons also. I love being able to use the coupons at both palces. We don't have an A C Moore here.

JoAnn's does take Michaels, but not on anything that is sold by the yard. Michaels does not sell by the yard material or trims. JFYI.

I used to work at a Joann's in Virginia for three years and we were never allowed to take coupons from another store. Maybe it depends on the managers at each location.

It may be a new policy or in certain areas. All the stores seem to interchange coupons -- I guess to keep customers from going to another store because they have coupons.
Patty -- did you see in a business column in the Post Standard that an AC Moore is likely to come to Finger Lakes Crossing -- the new plaza near the Auburn Mall?

Actually I've used Michael's coupons for yardage....it may vary by store-you might want to ask your store.

I wish Hancock's would take the Michael's & Joanne's coupons too.

Dorothy....

I saw the article about the three businesses (A.C. Moore, Home Depot and a steak house) projected to be moving into Fingerlakes Crossing - with a finish date of 2007. However, seeing how slow construction is in this area (Destiny for example that was suppose to be finished by now) I won't believe it until I see the doors open.

My friend was telling me that the artifical flowers seem to be the biggest seller at JoAnns so the competition across the street might be good, however the sales and prices are set by the home office and not by the managers. JoAnns seems to be more of a craft store rather than for home sewing store here, but without Hancocks, maybe they will have to start stocking more fabric.

They didn't stock much fabric before Hancocks either but maybe with a craft store like A. C. Moore open and with Hancocks closed they will.
Someone told me the JoAnns in Carousel Mall closed too. Do you know if that is true.
Now there is no reason for me to shop in Auburn at all. I just go to Lansing or Ithaca to spend my money.
Actually we hope to move to Syracuse in a few months to cut down on my husbands commute. Now that my kids are grown I'm ready to live in a city again. Syracuse isn't as far south as I wanted to go -- I was kinda hoping to be closer to Libby (like right next door) -- but now my husband has a new job so we'll probably tough out another couple winters.

Dorothy,

I believe JoAnns at Carousel closed at the end of March. I remember going through when my daughter was home on break and the store was quite empty except for some fabric they would have had a hard time giving away. Too bad I couldn't have picked up an Ott Light

I was really happy with fabric that I purchased through www.fabric.com and I think that is the route I will be going. I find it difficult to pay $9 a yard for cotton for quilting at the local quilt shop. I would like to support the shop, but the price of thread is more than what I paid for fabric.......Maybe it is because I have been around too long and I always thought $4 was the top of my budget way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Don't come to Canada to shop for fabric  ....Here the regular price of fabric at Walmart is $9 a meter (approx 39"). At Fabricville / Fabricland you can get it between $9 - $15 a meter. But at quilting stores in Ottawa the newer fabrics are now starting around $19-$21 a meter. It is only a couple of times a year that the quilting shops have sales and then the sale is usually between 10% - 30% off. So whenever I get notice of a sale I am there!!!!

It's about $8 or $9 in the other smaller shops I've been to and on line -- Equilter.
But I think it's a better quality than JoAnns, Hancocks and Walmart.
I'm not a quilter though so you can't take my word for it.

Patty,
When I was at the Hancocks sale a bunch of us were discussing the sorry state of the availability of fabrics around here. A couple gave directions to some Amish run shops with lots of quilting fabric. If you would like I'll see if I can find the directions and pass them on to you. They were both a bit of a drive for either you or me. One was in Conquest and the other was on the other side of Cayuga Lake.

Dorothy...
Sure, I'd love directions. I went to the Amish shop in Spring Lake about 19 years ago, but I don't remember how I got there.

Judy...
I think how quilting cottons have skyrocketed in price and I always wondered how our neighbors to the north were able to support their quilting habits....

Back in 1982 we went to Toronto :Canada: for a little weekend holiday and I have this "thing" where I always purchase fabric where I am so I can put it into a quilt and then remember the event. By '82, I had made baby quilts, and a sampler, but being a very inexperience quilter I purchased Laura Ashley Home Decorating fabric for a basket quilt for my daughter. I think I paid about $14 a meter back then (which for me was like buying fabric woven in gold), but I was madly in love with the design. Laura Ashley fabric will always be near and dear to my heart, but never meant to be hand quilted.

I don't think you want my husband to tell you about the time when we had gone to Thousand Islands and I told my husband that we had to cross the border so I could get some fabric in :Canada: (you know.....so I could remember the trip). My husband, the sweetheart that he is, patiently took the time to go through customs and then drove to find a fabric shop. This really wasn't the best thing to do with a car full of little tykes. By the time we got back to customs to get back into the :USA: , I broke out laughing when I declared 1 meter of fabric. My husband almost died.....fearing of course that we were going to have the entire car searched because I was acting suspiciously.....who would want to pull out the potty chair that was in the back of the van? But, to this day, I will always remember that fabric and what quilt it is in!

Patty, the AC Moore, Joann's, and Michaels where I am all swap coupons. In fact even stores like Bed Bath & Beyond and Linen's N Things will take each others coupons. Makes for good business sense.
