I'm trying to make some T-shirts for DH and will be using self fabric for the neck bands. I was wondering if I need to lengthen the bands since I'm not using ribbing. I know when I make Ts for the grands, my pattern has me lengthen the bands when using self fabric. I did a search here and didn't find any info on it previously. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Your bands will have to be longer than the ribbing you would allow. I am quite sure there is an equation somewhere that tells you how much but darned if I know it. Maybe experiment with scraps to find out what looks best.

I experimented Mary. I compared the stretch in some ribbing I had to what the stretch was in the knit I was using for the Tee and guesstimated what I needed to add. I thought 2 inches would be good. I sewed the seam in the neck band and had DH pull it over his head. Too big. An inch was just right.
Finished up the Tee today and it turned out good. The Kwik Sew pattern I used had 7 inches of ease  in the chest for the size he needed and the next size smaller would have only had 1 inch ease for his measurements so I had to do some alterations there, plus add some length. The back neck was too high also. Thankfully DH doesn't mind me fitting patterns to him before I start. The band was very wide and I ended up taking it off to reduce the width. DH can buy RTW Tees and look like he is wearing a turtle neck, so I really have to be careful with his necklines. Now I have a pattern for Tees all set to make more for him this summer. This fall I can make long sleeves for him.

My Serger book says you either need to cut your neckband 2/3 or 3/4 the total neckline measurement according to how much stretch is in the fabric.. Therefore , if the neckline is 24 inches then you would need either 16 in. band or 18 in. band. Nancy Zieman said to remember when measuring the neckline to do it at the seamline and stand the tape measure up on the line to insure an accurate measure.. I have found this works very wellfor all my T-shirt situations. Oh , one more thing, always cut the width at 2 1/2 inches.. (3 inches is too wide)
