I have one of my great grandmothers pillowcases that has flowes on it. The flowers look like she pulled thread through and twisted it until it wound around itself and then pulled it back through. Does anyone know what I am talking about?? I have packed it away becuase it was the only pillow case I would sleep with after she died and it is very hole-ey and I wanted to try and duplicate it but I am not sure how it was done. If I can find it in the next few days I will take a picture and post it so maybe some one can give me a clue of how it was done.

Any help please!

Hmm, it sounds like a french knot. Would that be similar?

I think that you are probably right, Mary. It sounds like hand made French knots. I think that there are some candlewicking stitches that might be similar (or just more French knots). I never got into the candlewicking stitches but I've certainly made my share of French knots.

I would have voted for a french knot as well
http://inaminuteago.com/stitchdict/stitch/frenchknot.html should give you a clue.

The DIY Network has a video about Embroidered Linens (it's on their home page) and then shows how to do french knots and another type of knot that looks like a leaf. It was so easy to understand I wanted to go out and get a hoop and some ribbon!

A bullion stitch is also larger than a french knot with several wraps around the needle rather than the three or four with the french knot......

Could it be a variation of brazillian embroidery?

sounds like maybe cause it's based a lot on buillion and french knot type stitches.

I'm on the french knot bandwagon too....have made more than my share and still enjoy sitting down to embroider once in a while

See I never comunicated with other sewers until now and that is why I have been clueless!! It is a french knot..I think. Its been years since I looked at the pillow case but I am almost 100% sure that is it. My husband who is reading over my shoulder just threw his hands up in the air and said great another crafty hobby to get into, LOL. But I think it would be pretty on smocking on a little girls dress (if I could ever figure out the smocking thing).

Thank you every one!!

Sounds like a bullion stitch to me too. It's done like a french knot, but longer. I've seen them used to embroider roses. I remember using that stitch in a high school art class (loooooong ago) to make little feet on a parrot I stitched for a project. :dave:

I tried to get the local sewing shop to have a smocking class but to no avail yet. I really want to learn but I am a textile person and have got to have my hands on it actually doing it. I have read several articles about doing it and all I have picked up is that the area you want to smock needs to be about 3 X's the regular length, LOL!!! I am blonde and of close polish decent...Not to offend any one that was a joke!!! I am sure once I get it once I will be OK. I am able to do about 3/4 of my patterns by memory now....Wait Grandma Sue sent me a huge box recently so less than that

Well take it from someone who knows about blonds...you will always be Polish but you won't always be blond. (Well, naturally blond anyway.)
