I am making a backless evening dress for a special occasion. I want it to have a halter neckline, but I'm worried about too much side boob exposure. How can I make the pattern so that the neckline completely covers me? -Danielle |

I'd start by making your shoulder seams a little deeper than you usually do to put some tension on the V. Then when you're fitting the fabric if the necline wants to gap use a stay. Cut a piece of twill tape a bit shorter than the length of the V for each side and ease the edge of the neckline to the length of the twill. Viola! No more gap. Hope this helps. Barbara |

You said sides not neckline. Try cutting the armhole high, making it very snug across the back and using the same staying technique I suggested for the neck along the armhole edge. |

You may need to widen the portion that covers the breasts a bit. It really depends on they type of halter. Widening the area under the arms up through the straps could easily do it. You can also add a little elastic casing in the sides of that portion to make sure that it snugs the body. There is also some tape that can be used on the body to keep the halter close and there is a type of spray glue that can be used (commonly used with swimwear.)

Backless=no arms, just around the neck or backless= arms holes that drop down to the waisteline??? I am a very "full figured" woman atleast on top. I have not made a whole lot of clothing for me because of that, but I have learned a few tricks. Double sided tape...Its a life saver, or atleast an embarrasment saver!! The one silky halter top I made myself came up around the neck and did not have arms. The front had what I believe is called "princess seams?" those cuts that come up just below your bust. I allowed a little more room on top for the girls there, especially the sides. You dont so much have to worry about them jumping to the middle they would just hit themselves!! But the princess seams I pulled in more for a tighter fit and more support this didnt allow for as much "wiggle room". When in doubt...Duct tape. I know it sounds tacky but it works once you perfect it. You do dnot want to tape all tha way around (obviuosly no back!) just enough to keep them from sliding sideways. If the dress is low cut in the front then you want to go more under than across, and make sure not to pull tight because then you can tell you have taped you boobs together, LOL!! Sorry I cant help very much with the sewing part, but you are allowed to laugh at me for having taped my body before!! Stephi

Duct tape is like The Force; it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together!
