I've been asked to make a couple of vinyl air cleaner covers...one is for a boat and one is for a pull truck...one is oval one is round....I have the measurements of each...my question is just that I wondered if anyone else has ever made anything like this and if you have any tips or suggestions that might help me thru this I would very much appreciate hearing them!!! They just want them to cover the air filters for going down the road or to keep the weather out.... would I make a seam for the sides or just gather it with the elastic?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

I know that I'd use Sunbrella for the fabric instead of vinyl. They'd also get a whole lot of wind resistance so you'd have to be sure that they were really attached well I don't know that just some elastic would be enough. You might need some sort of strapping. I'm not sure.

Thanks! However, they specifically asked for vinyl and want elastic instead of any type of drawstring... I may have gotten myself into something! LOL I will just give it a shot I guess and see what I come up with...I have some brown vinyl...one of them said brown was ok the other one wants black so I told him he would have to go shopping then! LOL

Thanks again for your response!

Naw, I make covers for things all the time...it is just a matter of measuring the sizes and recreating the shape...no problem. You just need to look at the wind resistance and make sure that you have enough "folded under" to support the outside and not "pop off". If it is made like a drum cover I'd probably just extend the sides to roll back and have the elastic or drawstring in that area. It really shouldn't be a problem at all. My problem is that I'm not sure of the shapes your are dealing with and how the wind resistance will effect them when going down the road. If the wind hits the item from the side I would think that the elastic alone would not be enough, as in a covered boat going down the road...I would think that it would need additional strapping across the bottom to guarantee it stays in place. If it hits from the top or front (like a tire on the back door of a van) I think the elastic would probably be fine.

For future reference, the Sunbrella is woven and waterproof. It and cordura are used for a lot of different heavy weight products. You'll find luggage, instrument covers, all kinds of things made of it. Sunbrella is coated on the back and comes in a mess of colors. It resists cracking (nothing to crack) and wear for years in an outdoor setting. I like the texture when working with it and it sews like fabric. It is a little expensive but the end result is well worth it. Many people are not familiar with the product (most everyone has seen it) and you, of course need to do what the customer requests.

Agreeing with Pam, I think you would be better off making a piece the same shape as the top of the air cleaner and sew a gusset all around, like a chair cushion. This would fit tighter and be less likely to blow off. Just trace the top of the air cleaner and add whatever seam allowance you prefer ( I like 1/2"). If you want to be fancy, you could even put welting around the top fabric just like a cushion.

yes, that was my plan...the gusset and also the welting...I just don't see doing half a job regardless if they say they aren't that fussy or not! LOL Thanks for your responses...appreciate your thoughts and tips!!
