[B]We are getting ready to go on a trip from Alabama to the west coast for several special occations. Most of our children are there ,and I want to enjoy every minute. Here is my problem. I have a lot of arthritus in my neck and those Airline pillows don't do the trick for me. I was wondering if I couldn't make my own travel pillow, but need instructions or a pattern. HELP!! |

I have arthritis and a odd curviture problem in my neck too. I like the little pillows from Wal Mart that feel like they have sand in them. I have two one is like a long fat tube and one is heart shape. THey are very easy to shape to the form of your neck and they keep your neck from sagging while you sleep.

I know what you mean about airline pillows. I inherited a number of different shaped pillows from my mother who had terrible arthritis in her neck and used before she finally started to use foam collars (perhaps an idea for travel). Most of her old pillows were too firm for me, specifically the dog bone shaped pillow and I couldn't stand the way it muffled sound. In an attempt to make myself a softer one I came up with the idea simply to make a long narrow pillow which I can double up if I want something thicker. I can't recall the exact measurments I used as it changes when filled but it was approx 6" x 15". As I was 'redoing' some down pillows at the time I filled the pillow with left over down and kept experimenting until I filled it to a firmness I liked. Since then I have made several others with poly filling and have them everywhere in my house. I use them in the small of my back as it is long enough to reach right across, taking it to the dentist when I need to sit or lie back for awhile. I also use one under my neck when leaning back in chair and watching TV. The down one compresses and fluffs up very well and I never travel without it. It compresses easily into a take on luggage tote bag. I read somewhere that one could try to use fleece lap blankets. If you are travelling by car and don't care what you look like you could take a length of fleece and some duct tape and shape it to whatever shape you need. Probably need to experiment with amount of fleece you need. This was suggested for people to ask for airline blankets to use as pillows and then blankets if get cold during the flight (supposedly coldness wins over pain in the neck ) Here are a few sites with patterns: http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/sew/pilltrav.shtml - traditional travel pillow - ie square http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa030398.htm - dog bone shaped pillow Good luck and let us know what works - I think many of us could use the info. *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

My three year old has a horse shoe shaped pillow that we use in the car. I also have seen in the local stores one for adults that have a type of memory foam in it. I made the same flight a few years ago from Alabama to Alaska I wish I had thought about a pillow. Good luck and a safe and Healty trip Catherine Catherine

Felicity Huffman was on Martha Stewart's show yesterday. She was showing a pillow that she designed and is marketing. She designed it for when she was sitting up at night taking care of her sick kids. She even mentioned that it was great for airplanes. It has a flap on the back with a grip to keep it on the back of the chair. I think it is a great idea and may try making my own... Here's the link to the pillow (http://www.fromfelicity.com/everyday_pillow.htm) TTFN from
