Anyone make any neat boys clothing lately and could share some pics? I have a 3 y/o and love looking on ebay for ideas. I have made lots of shorts/pants and appliqued shirts. I have made several appliqued overalls too, but I find them too time consuming. We are going on vacation in July and would like to make some neat boutique type clothing. Thanks so much! Felicia

I will admit to making some quick and super easy kwik sew stuff for vacations. No applique or anything fancy just because. No real pics as I don't own a digital camera. But the patterns are ridiculously easy and fairly cheap.

Hi there, two ideas, one is to make zip-off pants. Jalie pattern #977 (timmelfabrics.com carries it) is a good one I have used, and has size 2 up to adult. You may want to lower the waist a little. It's not the fastest to make, but my son was so impressed, and the end result is ideal travel clothes because you are prepared for hot and unexpectedly cool weather with one item. The other idea is just to topstitch along the seams of whatever you make in a contrasting colour, as there seems to be a lot of this around. If you have trouble topstitiching, there is a presser foot you can get to help.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. If you're looking for something unusual or "ritzy", I would think you could use some really fancy fabric or embellish it with an original design/idea. I'm currently making my GS (who'll be 18 mos old on 6/10) a tank top with matching shorts using a Simplicity unisex toddler pattern. Easy and simple, but this pattern also has the option of making the boys' outfit as a sailor suit. It's Simplicity #5982, and I can see where you could make some really cute and original variations for your little one!

When my boy was a little younger I used to like to make him little Jon-Jons. I used a pattern in the Martha Pullen Applique Book to make these lined Jon-Jons. I made quite a few pairs. It was a great pattern, though I found it short and had to allow quite a bit of length in the chest area when I cut it out.
Jon-Jon Picture

Lately, I have really liked making him shirts out of character fabric. I have been using Simplicity 7030. I like this pattern since it is the only boys shirt pattern I have found with a separate collar stand. I like to make the sleeves short. Here is a photo of the shirt I made him using Batman fabric. I have just finished making one with some Transformer "type" fabric, but don't have a photo yet.

Becky~those are just adorable! My son saw the batman shirt from across the room and came running! I'm so glad you put the pattern number because I've been looking for the same thing - my boys love wearing button down shirts to school and events - but they are particular about materials (they love hawaiian prints but hate plaids that sort of thing.)Thanks!

Becky, cute pics! Thanks for the pattern #'s, my dgs is ready to start wearing button shirts to school-he's been doing tshirts but likes the occasional button shirt. I usually take him shopping for fabric so I know he will wear what I make if he picks out the fabric.

Thanks for the complements. I have to say I am crazy about this pattern. I love the style and the fit.

I just finished another one. This one uses some "Transformer" type design fabric I found at JoAnn's. I also just bought some Hotwheels fabric at Hobby Lobby for another.

I used to really hate buttonholes. I generally had to spend a half hour picking the first one out with the seam ripper (while cursing under my breath about never doing anything again with buttonholes). I learned some simple things at a little machine mastery class I took when I got my new machine.

First, I was always too lazy to make a practice buttonhole before doing the first one on my project. I would rather make a mistake on a scrap than on the real project.

The second thing is to use a good stabilizer and plenty of it. I like using two layers of "Sulky Super Solvy" Heavier water soluble stabilizer. I just trim off the excess once the buttonhole is done and dissolve the rest with water. I put them on top of the fabric.

The last thing that would get me is when doing a buttonhole on a collar stand where there is some irregular bulk. I just try to eliminate all the bulk that I can in these areas trimming seams allowances well as I sew the stand.

Practice on scraps. It is a shame to miss out on sewing things with button. Beat the buttonhole. You can win.

I am not good at buttons either. My mom has a neat snap contraption that I use and then I sew a button over the top, LOL. It looks fine for me and easier for my 3 y/o. He still has some difficulty with buttons. My son isn't into many characters yet, just Thomas, Jay Jay and the new Cars. I just bought several Disney Cars fabrics, so I will see what I can make with them. Thanks for all your great pictures. I wil try to post them as I get them done. Right now I am working on a neat fish/tropical outfit...the shorts have the fish/tropical fabric and the shirt is 3D with rubber/plastic fish that are inside a clear fishbowl. There is a neat aquarium in Branson that he will wear that outfit. Felicia

BeckyW, can I just say I want to snack on your little boy! He is so cute! It was also fun to see a picture of him so young, and then poof - grown up a couple years.

I just made my son a pair of butterfly pajamas - I'll have to post pics.

Felicia - how on earth are you making a clear fishbowl to hold fish on a shirt? Will you have to hand wash it? Sounds hard. My son is very into Thomas as well....I haven't seen the new Cars material but I'm trying to cut down on fabric accumulation and work on "project maintenance" aka - finishing all the little projects......the baby is a year old and I still haven't finished the bumper for her crib....geesh.

I took a heavyweight(not real thick though) clear plastic tablecloth(Wal-Mart, you can buy it by the yard) and I cut out a fish bowl shape and set it aside. Then I appliqued to the middle of a t-shirt...water, sand and plants. Then I set the fishbowl on top of what I appliqued, pinned it where the stitch would hit and stitched around it, leaving a small opening. I then put in my fish, using a pencil to move them around to where I wanted them and then I satin-stitched it close. It is pretty tight, but it is ok if they move around, they are fish afterall,LOL. I have used the plastic before on other things and have washed it on the gentle cycle if the shirt was dirty. If it wasn't dirty, I just hand washed it. I hung it to dry then ironed just on the t-shirt, not the plastic. I have never had any problems with it. I should be completely done with it tonight and will try to take som pictures. Felicia

Here is a baseball outfit I finished. Long shorts with a pocket and an appliqued t-shirt. I did not make the bottlecap necklace...Ebay. It has a baseball on it with my son's name(Kota). I didn't make the visor either, I just put patches over the basketball and soccer ball. I thought it came out pretty cute. I didn't finish my fish outfit last night, I watched a movie instead, LOL.http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j213/kdgteacher/MVC-013S.jpg

You watched a movie?!!! Haven't done that in awhile......I should try it again probably. :whacky:
That baseball outfit is great - very creative. The fish outfit sounds complicated but I'm excited to see pictures. SOunds like you are a very creative person!!!
I showed the pictures of the shirts to my youngest son, he really liked the batman one. I said "do you like the shirts?" He said, "No - just the Batman." So I said, " Sweetie its the same pattern though - do yu like the button down shirt?" He said,"Mom, it's not the same. That one is robots (he doesn't know transformers) and that one is Batman. See? The Batman one is better. I don't need a robot one. I need a Batman one - can we go visit that boy and I can borrow his shirt or you can make me one and we'll go take pictures with that boy."

The baseball outfit is very cute. I can't wait to see the fish one when you are done..was thinking about it last night wondering if my youngest dgs would like one.

MrsSnuggly-even my 24y daughter has trouble seeing the "pattern" and not the "picture". She'll look at a pattern and say I don't like it because of the fabric they used....I tell ya!

i asked earlier how you made the fish bowl but i have found that how did you do the fish? I guess I should read everything before I write. I liked your fish bowl idea so much. I think im going to try a gum ball machine if you dont mind me using your idea either. Thank you so much for the inspiration

lizzybugsmommy-The fish are rubber manipulatives(toys) that I used in my Kindergarten classroom. I got them out of one of my teaching catalogs. The gumball idea would be neat too. You could sew on all kinds of colored buttons before sewing the plastic cover on. I'd love to see a picture when you are finished. Our use marbles or rubber balls...the possibilites are endless, LOL. McCall's 4164 is very similar to another shirt pattern I have, and I have made a shirt by that pattern too. The reason I like Simplicity 7030 so much is that the collar is in two pieces; collar and collar stand separate. This makes the collar stand up like one of daddy's shirts. The other type seems to lay flatter, like on a Hawaiian shirt. The other difference between the two patterns is that Simplicity 7030 has a back yoke and two little pleats in the body where the body joins the yoke. No one is really better than the other. It is just a style choice really.

Since Simplicity 7030 did not have a short sleeve pattern, I just used my other pattern to get an idea of sleeve length. I had traced my pattern on freezer paper since there were so many sizes that I would use later. I just cut my tracing off to the right length. There probably was a better way to make a nicer looking sleeve, but I just cut the sleeve straight across at the length that matched the other pattern. You can't just swap out sleeve patterns since the armseye is a totally different shape.

A sales flyer came from Hancock's yesterday advertising Simplicity patterns for 99 cents July 3rd thru 5th.
