Ok - so I transfer patterns with a wheel and paper (which works great - no issue there) but when I need to transfer dots I have a time. My mother asked me if I have a "chalk and pin" - I told her no, and that I had no idea what that even was! I know about tailor's chalk - but this is specifically for transferring dots and marking measurements...... Here's the question/problem: I can't find them anywhere. Any thoughts? I have looked online - nothing and looked at 3 major fabric stores - they all have tailor's chalk in the big squares, but no "chalk and pin" (2 had women that knew what I was tlking aobut - but no idea where to get it.... ). Let me know. Thanks so much! |

What I sometimes do is using the colored tracing paper, I transfer an "X" with the tracing wheel where the dot is located onto the fabric. It works well and I don't have to go out and spend more $$. Just an idea..... - Maureen.

That's a good idea. Oh and the markers are what I already use - apparently this "chalk and pin" thing just pokes a tiny hole in the pattern and fabirc and marks both sides of the fabric (or mulitple pieces) at the same time. Thanks for the websites though! More for my list. |

I use an exacto, and slice open the pattern over the small dot with an "x", then use the center of the x (center of the dot) to mark with a marker or chalk.

I stick a pin thru the pattern at the dot, then lift up carefully the pattern and first layer of fabric a little way and using my chalk pencil I mark with the pin's help a small dot right where the pin is in the fabric..(from the inside) This method marks both pieces at once and is on the wrong side. I always use chalk pencils for my markings. I buy the kind that have a different color on each end.. That way I have 1 that works for both light and dark fabrics at once..

There are handy gadgets called hollow punches that allow you to make a hole in paper, leather, etc. You can use them to make a hole in the pattern at a place where you only want to make a small mark. Once the hole is made you can then put chalk (school board chalk or tailors chalk) into the hole. This makes a easy to see marking on the material and comes out readily when you are finished. http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/CTGY/hollow-punch HTH, Mary |

I use the air or watersoluble markers-only time I have a problem with those is when I'm using a dark fabric.

I do the same as Libby except I put a pin through the pattern at the dot, then through the bottom Pull apart carefully & you can mark the inside at the pins. I also use chalk or a chalk pencil. I used to have one of the chalk pins you are asking about. I can't find it or I would send a picture. I got mine back in the '70s when I started working at Jo Anns. If I find it I will send picture. But I don't get much sewing time right now. Schhols out in 4 more days. Open house for DS on the 17. Then I should have more time for me!!!
