I have signed my 4yo D up for tap and ballet and I know it is something she will be wanting to stick with. Cruising ebay out of shear bordom I ran across professional tutus...How on earth do they get them to stand out like that??
I am getting sewingCM to help me make a good old fashioned leotard, but I cant imagine having to make one of these "professional" tutus. Hopefully I wont have to make them ever, but if I do I know where to turn with questions, LOL!!

Well they way I have made them for ebay and for my girls is two different ways.
1. Cut tulle into thin strips. length depends the length you want your skirt (If you want in 6 inches long then cut in in at least 12 inches because it will be doubled when tied. take elactic or ribbon and tie your tulle around it and scrunch together. add alot for a poofy one. The tuule will stand itself out.

2. take the strips fold them so you have two strips from one long one and stretch elastic while you sew.

I hope I am not confusing you. I am not good with directions LOL...I like the first way better (no sewing ;) )

No those "professional" ones

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Professional-White-Classical-Ballet-Tutu-sz-small_W0QQitemZ9327227624QQcategoryZ98722QQrdZ1QQc mdZViewItem

Like this. They stand straight out from the body!! Just looks really hard, but they sure are pretty!

Oh I thought you meant a basic tutu. now I see.
I am not sure unless its the way they are turning to make it look full. Maybe you can ask the seller what the bottom is and if it stands out like that or if its in the twirl. sorry im not much help.

Those are on a fairly firm leotard bottom separate from the bodice usually.

The top layer nearest the waist is put on first, hanging upsided down. And several layers of similar length but dong down just below the first layer. Then they get shorter, and shorter as they go to about 1/2 way down the seat (about top of leg hole). Then there are tiny ruffles similar to the eyelet on a baby's diaper covering. They are hung upside down when not being worn, and when flipped right side up, they stand out.

I watched ladies making them for the ballerinas in the local company I was in when I was a teen.

It said on the ad...11 LAYERS of cut tulle for the tutu..I think if it was 11 layers it WOULD stand out like that...(not to mention being heavy...) I guess thats why they like ballerinas so light, so the male's can pick them AND their costumes up too...

I took a long hard look at some like this at a community festival last year, b/c I was wondering the same thing. One of the ballet schools had their older girls performing, and their costumes were gorgeous. The ones I saw had a few layers of tulle on the very bottom that were short, but they were also sewn on upside down. Make sense? The bottom layers were attached with the seam allowance on the bottom of the skirt, so they stuck upward, and since they were so short, the ends of the bottom layers of tulle supported the top layers like a brace. The top layers rested upon the "braces", so they really couldn't flop.

I wondered...Just one of those things you see and go how on earth did they do that?? But deconstructing it I can see now how that is possible. If I didnt have a forum to ask on I probobly would have bought one to "investivate" on.

Curiousisty killed the cat, and I am that cat!!!!

Hi Stephi, If your daughter gets into dance you will constantly be needing "stuff". Here is a website that might be worth having.

Well, if your daughter dances for around 10 years straight she might need a small version of this - but you shouldn't have a need for a professional tutu as they are usually rented or company property. I danced for ABT for 15 years and those costumes are specially designed to go with sets and other costumes (for example swan lake has 2 major ones that are exact opposittes but exactly alike - one in white, for Odette, and one in black...) You might have to invest in making the floppier kind or the longer versions (like snow in the nutcracker usually has longer ones - and they're not nearly as hard.) but most tutus come with pointe lessons (which should happen after age 8).
Well, there's me rambling........they're actually pretty hard to make, is the point. My mother made a whole companies worth one year. Um, yeah - that is so great she's dancing......

Thanks for the website!! Its pretty cool, and I will share it with my SIL. I am getting ready to dive into a good old fashioned leotard for my daughter, but I want to make some with the skirt already on it after I get some practice.. Cybersewmom is helping me some since she is sooooooo good at the lycra stretch stuff!!! I have a baby shower I forgot about sat (oops) so I need to get a little dress and booties made and I have another in two more weeks so I am just going to whip them both up then start on the "challenge at hand"

Thanks for the info everyone.

I think I made a slide show of the leotard that I "fixed" for my D to wear. It was a long sleeve generic one but I took the sleeves off and added dangles to it and little lady bugs. Then I mad e the skirt yesterday out of some LO chiffon/organza type material and put a little lady bug on the bottom. Obviuosly she loved it!! But right now she loves anything mommy makes :-)
I also amde her a ballet bag for her tap and ballet shoes but thats for the June competition so I wont show that till later...Dont worry ladies It has a few flubs on it, LOL!!

They dont require special outfits until 7 or 8 YO dance class. Even then it Black, Pink or Blue leotard and wrap, and they dont dont mind if they have stuff on them like the lady bugs or alot of the pink ones have princess'.

I dunno my dd does gymnastics cause red is her signature color. If I tried to get her into a pink body suit (so she could do dance) a murder might be committed(mine by her).
