Can someone fill me in on what a swap is and how I can get involved? I am new to quilting, but want to jump right on in the deep end!

Hi,

I am new as well. I have done two swaps so far. They are well worth it. If you are going to do a fat quarter swap (that is the ones I have done) then you get the fabric you want to use and every month a list goes out with names. You send one fat quarter to everyone on the list but not yourself. Then the others also send one to you. It is a good way to get a nice variety of fabrics to build up your stash.

Here's the link for the rules to one of the scavenger hunts we did.

http://sew-whats-new.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18960&highlight=swap+rules

and the rules to our monthly fat quarter swap:

Hope this info helps. We do the fat quarter swap monthly. Carman will post something near the end of the month listing what kind of fabric it will be and you let her know if you want to sign up. Then she'll send out the lists, you buy your fabric to match the theme and mail out a FQ (18 x22") to all the names on the list (except yours). Most of our FQ swaps are 100% cotton fabric.

How can someone participate if they haven't in the past? The way I interpret the rules is if you haven't done one in the past you can't do the current one? I was considering joining in, but I've never done one.... :nc:

Kim, if you join one of the FQ swaps that we do every month, it counts as having done a swap before. the rules are in place like that on the "bigger" swaps because every once in a while someone doesn't come through on the swaps and there's nothing worse than going all out for your partner and getting nothing in return. I haven't seen it happen here but I have seen it on other boards I belong to.

And, just to clarify, we all know life gets in the way of our fun at times. It's more the folks that don't let you know there's a problem and they just don't respond that upset most people.

Ok, now I've tried to word this all carefully so I'm hoping I didn't offend anyone in trying to explain this.

I plan to join in July, or August, depending on what I can get finished garment wise. I want a clean slate so I can concentrate on my quilting since I am new at this.

So, in essence, I need to buy enough fabric to cover everyone that is in the months swap - a list is posted ahead of time so we know how much to buy?

Is the theme/color array posted in advance?

We send everyone on the list, but ourselves, the 18 x 22" of what we buy that goes with the theme/color array.

There a lot of reading to understand the rules - sorry!

Am I getting this right?

I do not do the fat quarter thing, but I think I remember that they need to be laundered first.. I'm not sure, but you better check on that, also..

Butterfly-that's right. And don't worry about laundering first-some of us do and some of us don't. Just be sure to stick a tag on the fabric or write a note on the envelope whether it's washed or unwashed.

The theme for the month is announced ahead of time so you can decide if you want to join in that month or not. After everyone has had a chance to sign up Carman sends out the mailing list by email.

If the theme is something I really like I'm often shopping ahead. I've found that in general there are usually 8-10 of us involved each month so I usually buy 3 yards of fabric, then I have some extra for me most months. But..if it's a theme I'm willing to try but not sure I can find something to do with a lot of the fabric, I wait until I know how many people signed up. More people usually sign up when it's pretty "regular" fabric (ie: flowers, bugs, a certain color, etc), fewere when the fabric tends to be pricier like the fossil ferns we are doing this month.

Hope that helps.
