Hi everyone, are you ready for a new contest. Here we go.

I want everyone to make a purse. A purse with a working closure (zipper, magnetic snap, etc.) and at least one inside pocket. Also, hard handles (plastic, bone, etc.) or strap are required. This should also be embellished on the outside. The most innovative, creative purse will be the winner.

Your challenge is to sew, knit, crochet or weave a purse with original embellishments. The basic purse construction can be from any pattern. ANY DEVIATION FROM THESE REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

Challenge begins today and ends July 12/06. Send a picture of your finished purse to me at <email address removed for privacy>

Winner will be announced July 19/06. Voting will take place for one week to decide. One lucky winner will receive a Sew Scrambled Scarf kit from www.k1c2.com
This kit has some of the prettiest fun fibers you could imagine along with beads to adorn. Fast, fun and easy. Any beginner can create this gorgeous scarf. Finished scarf is 7" x 46". All materials and decorative trim included in the kit along with a roll of water soluble stabilizer and complete directions.

Any questions, ask them now.

I saw a cute purse fabric at www.wazoodle.com. It would make the perfect lining. It is white with purse images on it. Cute.

Diaper bag count as a purse? I'm going to have to make a new one for the next baby when we drop her (I'm convinced if I think hard enough this baby will be a her) off at church nursery.

Great idea Mary! I might be in, I already have a pattern drawn up and had made a muslin a few months ago and I'm ready for a new purse. In the middle of some wedding outfits right now, though. I'll get back to you, sounds like great fun to see all the projects!

Mary, This is the one I've been waiting for !!!! I'm in.I love making purses! I haven't made one in a while, but have just the one in mind. I'm making a purse to carry at my daughter's wedding this summer. I won't give away any clues except to say it will meet all the criteria. If I can figure out how to send pictures, I'll send one. I'd like to know if a diaper bag counts as a purse too. I haven't carried a "real" purse in ages, it's always a diaper bag with my wallet and all the other junk I need for the kids...

I have had a few entries sent to me already. :bg:

I want to clarify that the handles/strap must be made of some sort of hard substance such as plastic, bone, etc. or filled with cording. No ribbon or webbing handles will be accepted. Thanks everyone.

Mary -
I've read the rules and I do have a question about the handles/strap: If I don't want to do one long strap can I make two shorter handles from the same material as the outer lining? Or will that get disqualified?
With all the packing/unpacking to be done (we close on our house June 30, 2006 - dh is still kicking and screaming - I'm packing the entire house myself) and starting work July 10, I may not have enough time to get something done, but I can always try!

Hehe Can the original embellishment be the handles...I am having a stroke of creative genius..Yes they will be hard and conform to the criteria you have set for us

I am going to have to go on a tinker hunt for this one...what fun!!!

My current purse is well barely a purse and about 6 years old.

Hey, the computer is not a tangable item and there for is harder to figure out. If it makes you feel better I am sure you are real good at cutting and pasteing in the real world, LOL.

I am out for this challenge too. Wish I had the time because I had an awesome Idea for a horse purse with handles made out of a crop or bridle strap or something. But alas, time can not be bought and I have 8 birthdays, 3 more baby showers and christmas comming up. Good luck all who compete!!

I'm still not sure about "original embellishments". I am cutting out lace motifs from a large piece of alencon lace, then adding beads for the wedding dress. Would the lace pieces on the purse be considered original embellishments?

I am having problems with this challenge ladies. Many have sent in their lovely entries but the handles are not meeting the specifications. If your handle on your purse is not "hard" meaning plastic, bone, wood, etc. please try to change it so that your purse can be judged. Many of you have straps which are not acceptable. Sorry.

I will extend the deadline for finishing if need be.

I will have to work on my "vision" purse. I just bought one that I thought I would love because of its size, but it has one major fault..The top is skinnier than the bottom almost half the size and I have a field day trying to get my check book in and out of it!! Good thing it only cost $4, LOL!!

Now ladies you read the description and the rules...tisk tisk tisk!!

Mary we want to see some of them after you are done judging

OK - even though I REALLY wanted to participate in this, it's just not going to happen.
