I'm new to this forum and was wondering if someone had any ideas for a sewing cabinet. I want to be able to sew in my family room and I want to be able to hide everything when we have company. I have an extension table for my sewing machine so my work surface has to be large enough to hold it.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks - Becky

Depending upon your budget, have you considered any of the armoires that are available at office supply stores? They may have some that you can use and then fold up and close the doors. Do you want to hide your sewing machine as well? Perhaps you could find a nice table for your sewing machine and extension table that matches your familyroom decor, and leave it in plain view. You can then have a beautiful cabinet with doors for the rest of your supplies. I think that unless you opt for the specially made sewing cabinetry (Koala, Horn, etc), many of the less expensive sewing desks may not be large enough depending upon the size of your stash of supplies?

Disclaimer, I have not seen everything out there and I am sure someone else will be along with more information than I can provide.

I have the sewing cabinet from wal-mart. it is in the fabric dept. I think its like $89 or so and it has a leaf that comes out and rest on the door and all sorts of cubby areas. I LOVE mine!!

That little Wal Mart cabinet is a nice little cabinet for the money. I think you may be happier with a real sewing cabinet of sorts rather than a desk. Sewing cabinets, esp one that will allow your machine to set into the cabinet are a little lower and a lot more comfortable. I like my machines on top for embroidery, lower for sewing. If you want to spend good money, there are lovely cabinets that will allow you to hide your machine(s) that are made by Horn or Koala. If you don't mind your machine showing there are a number of cabinets that do not allow your machine to fold into the cabinet or auto lift down/up that would still hide most of the "ugly" parts of sewing. You can just use a drop cover or your machine's hard cover on top of the machine. There are also those that allow you to set your machine into the cabinet and will fold around it so that nothing shows. They look more like a console type piece of furniture. The disadvantage is that you have to lift the machine in and out.

I have the Horn 2078 Cabinet and it folds up to a credenza when it's not in use. It has an electronic air lift and a side shelf for my serger plus storage drawers. While pricey, it is so worth it because I sew in our main living area. Happy Stitching!

Koala has a new line called Koala Lite. I have one and find it very nice even tho it's smaller than the regular line.

Weezy
