Here are some more things for my dd, again linking through Pattern Review:

A pair of PJ's Simplicity 5231, PJ's (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=14549)

Another pair of PJ'sKwik Sew 2447, PJ's (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=14550)

2 tank style swimsuits, Kwik Sew 2606, Swimsuits (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=14551)

2 tankink style swimsuits, Simplicity 5087, Tankini (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=6088) . This one I've made before, so I just updated it with this year's info and pictures of the 2 new swimsuits for this year!

I think I'm getting to the point I can make swimsuits in my sleep :bg: And I'm not done! My teen dd has a request for Jalie 2447 (http://www.jalie.com/catalog/popframes/2447.html) then I'd like a couple of new suits too! But swimsuits are a quick easy project

Great job on the swimwear , Laura!! How timely as I was just today about to beg anyone for any tips and hints for making a swimsuit. I have an old Simplicity pattern that I want to give a try this summer. I have already purchased the fabric and notions, and I called my local JoAnn and the clerk said that they do carry swimsuit lining fabric (we'll see Friday - plan to use my 50% off coupon). I do have a serger but I have never sewn a knit or stretch fabric of any kind :nc: . I am more inspired now though, thanks so much for sharing.

P.S. I enjoyed reading your pattern reviews. Great job on everything!

2 tips for sewing swimwear that really helped me!

1) use a stretch needles - I use them in the sewing machine & in my serger - don't know what kind of serger you have but mine will take Schemetz needles. You only need one needle in the serger with swimwear.

2) Wooly Nylon Thread! It makes a world of difference  It stretches with the stretch of the fabric & the elastic. I use it in the loopers & the needle on the serger. In the loopers it doesn't have to be an exact match, remember those are inside the suit. On the sewing machine I use the wooly nylon in my bobbin, I hand wind the bobbin with the wooly nylon. If you let the machine wind it then it would be too tight, loose the stretch.

My personal prefereance is to apply the elastic with my sewing machine instead of my serger, I just find it easier. I know some that do it with the serger, but I find it harder to handle the fabric, bulkier, etc. But most of all have fun  Swimsuits are projects that can usually be done up in a day so makes them pretty quick!

HI Laura

They swimsuits look great.........I have made the pink one on the cover of the kwiksew pattern.

They are easier than you think to make!!!

Very quick and the good thing i have found is that you can use remenants from the cheap box to mix and match, My DD (6) loves her original bathers!!

Well Done!!

Very nice swimsuits, Laura. I've not attempted a swim suit but you certainly make it look easy. Love the pattern for your teen DD too!

Those are cute - everything.

Here's a question....Can you make a swimsuit without a serger? I have a pretty nifty sewing machine - but would have to borrow grandmom's serger....just wondering. Any patterns for toddler swimsuits (12 mth - 18 mth)? Anyone?

Sure you can use a regular sewing machine! On using a regular sewing machine according to Kwik Sew's Book on Sewing Swimwear: (this is usually also printed in their patterns if you use Kwik Sew for swimwear).

"Sew the seams with a lightly narrower than medium zigag width & a slightly shorter thean medium stitch length, stretch the fabric slightly while sewing. Overcast the seam allowance together with a large zigzag stitch or use a 3-step zigzag stitch."

I would also use wooly nylon with it hand wound in the bobbin for the seams & the elastic application. Sew the elastic onto the fabric with a 3-step zigzag (short & wide - 1.5 length, 6 wide), then when you flip do the other zigzag or twin needle.

As far as a toddler swimsuit I'm not sure :nc: Kwik Sew has 2 under their toddler section:
KS 2680 (http://www.kwiksew.com/Patterns/P2680_2701/2680.cfm) - which is really a rash suit
KS 2512 (http://www.kwiksew.com/Patterns/P2501_2550/2512.cfm)

And here is a Review of 2512 (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=828) she states that a T1 fits a 12 month size. If you like the rash suit there was also a good review of 2680 (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=10944). I know some like the rash suits for the young kids to help with the burn factor. Other then those I'm really not up on the baby & toddler suits

THose are geat suits. I'm n ot terribly fond of kwik sew patterns - some of them are awful...but I think they're expanding because recently they've had quite a few cute ones. What is Rash suit - as in heat rash? Just wondering.
Thanks again,
Brandy~

I think generally Kwik Sew has had 2 problems, one being that their styles were kind of behind the times, but if you were creative (I'm not  ) they can be pulled off. The other item I've seen allot of issues with, even on the adult side is the sizing seems larger, and/or carries more ease then other patterns. On the other side though Kwik Sew has excellent swimsuit instructions, and has one of the larger selections for swimsuit outside of Jalie. Jalie (http://www.jalie.com) has a nice selection but they are french, and the instructions although also in English are not as easy as Kwik Sew.

A rash suit - was originally made for surfers. It was made to protect them from rashes of salt, sand, wind, etc plus sun! It is more of a body type suit, has elbow length sleeves, shorts to knee, but made out of swimsuit material, usually in 2 pieces, top & shorts. I've seen allot more people making them for young children to protect them from the sun these days.

Great info LauraM. I have taken your advice from your previous posts in this thread. I will be constructing my first swimsuit on the sewing machine, too. I ordered the Kwik Sew swimwear book but it is not scheduled for delivery until the first of July. Thanks again for the info. I hope it'll be okay to pop in and inquire every now and then.
