Anyone know how to make a dress out of a onesie? The kind where you sew a skirt onto the onesie? Not having a child to measure on, I would like the dimensions for the skirt and where to sew it on. A friend is due any day now with her first girl and I thought for summer, this would be great! Thanks!

Do you mean so it looks like a dress but is actually a onesie with a front attached - or just a skirt onto a onesie? I have quite a few of the dress type, from the front they look like dresses - but are super practial as they are really onesies.....

Yes, I think I want the dress kind. I saw a picture of them in a catalog and it looks like it was just a onsie with a skirt attached to make it a one piece dress. Anything practical is great.

The ones I have are attached at the shoulder seam - and the armhole then just hemmed. I'll have to look for the pattern - but Carter's has them and they seem to be easy. I'll get back to you!!! Tell her not to have the baby yet. :dave:

Try this site for instructions on how to make the baby t-shirt dress.

I just saw one of these on a little girl yesterday, and I thought, Oh, that must be what they meant on SWN!! The one I saw was like a dress in the front, but in the back it was just a regular onesie. I think I'd rather start from scratch with a one-piece pattern and add the front panel, since it gets sewn into the side and shoulder seams. To start with a ready-to-wear onesie, you'd have to rip out all of the seams before you get started. I don't get too excited about combining a seam ripper to a serged seam! I _do_ like the outfit on that web site, per phyllsplace, though!

It depends on what type of fabric you are going to use for the skirt portion of the "dress".

If you are going to use knit, then measure its "stretchability" and compare to that of the onesie you purchase. Figure out if you want a full skirt or just a flounce. For just a flounce, add about one to two inches to the amount of fabric you determined will match the stretch "guide" of the onesie...after all, they stretch quite a bit and you need this to move with the onesie, not against it.

If you are going to use woven material, sew the strip of fabric (that's all the skirts are on the onesies -- a rectangular piece of material for the most part) onto "stretchy" elastic and then sew that onto the onesie.

Where to sew it on?? About 2/3 of the way down from the neckline..far down enough to look pretty, but up enough to stay out of the way when changing the diaper.

Thanks for posting the DIY site for the onsie dress. I made a couple so hopefully it will work once the baby gets a little bigger as I used a 3 month size onesie. In this heat, you don't want the baby to wear too much.
