Hello again --

Now that I'm starting with the real dress, I have a bit of a dilemma -- the instructions say to do the bodice with the fashion fabric, a "lining" (which is really an underlining, it is sewn along with the fashion fabric), and a facing which is just a little strip across the top edge. Fusible interfacing is used on the facing piece. I hope that made sense! Since I'm concerned about the facing showing through, I am doing a full lining instead of just a facing -- should I apply the interfacing on this layer, or would it work better on the underlining? And would it be ok to do interfacing on just the very top edge of the lining, with the pattern pieces used for the facing? Thanks again for all your help!

I don't understand why you're worried about your facing/with interfacing showing through if you're doing an underlining? Is your fabric and your underlining combined still opaque?

Since I have no idea what your fabric is or the style of your bodice, I'm guessing....

Hey Patty - sorry if I'm being confusing -- I'm getting myself all confused too. :whacky: So...let me start over. :)

The design for the bodice is this (http://www.simplicity.com/assets/4689/4689.jpg), the one on the upper left. The pattern itself calls for a lining, but not an underlining (unlike what I said earlier..). The fabric is cream cotton sateen (a quilting fabric, not very heavy or opaque), and I'm underlining in cotton broadcloth. The lining is Egyptian cotton. I could still do the facing as the pattern calls for, but I guess I'm wondering if it might get too bulky at the top edge, since I'm adding another layer (the underlining) onto what they have. However, it seems like it might be a necessary part to stiffen the top edge, with the interfacing and all.

If I have a chance to drop into JoAnns today, I will, and I'll take a look at the instructions on the pattern. With that said, since you're not doing the facing (where the interfacing would normally be applied) and you are doing an underlining, I would just put interfacing on my underlining to give the top edge body.

I would think the dress calls for some boning in the front seams?

I'm making a similar dress, and I'm also about to cut into the real fabric. My plan is to apply interfacing to the entire underlining. I've also got a lining to add, and boning at the seams. I don't think it will be too bulky this way, and I've gotten rid of those annoying facings! I hope this helps.

When I did the DD wedding dress, I was told by someone on the boards, to use organza as my interfacing. It gave me the body I needed and although it was sewn in, it worked really well, and didn't show through at all, and was lightweight for those seams that can get bulky with all that fabric in there.

Well, things are starting to come together with the bodice! The lining is sewn, boning inserts, and for the outer layer I decided to add some interfacing along the top edge of the underlining. Hopefully that will work. Funny thing is, when I sewed the lining together I put the opening for the zipper on the "wrong" side (right instead of left). I debated ripping out the other seam and putting it in the "right" place, but decided it didn't really matter since it's kind of arbitrary anyway. So, I would just have to remember to put the opening in the other layer on the same side. Even after I thought about it for a while, I still ended up doing it wrong! :whacky: Oh well, it's fixed now. Time to put the zipper in and see how everything's worked out! Thanks again for all your help, everyone. I'm really starting to feel like things are coming together, and none too soon since the wedding is less than 2 weeks away now. :nervous:

Oh my gosh! I do things like that all the time. My most recent goof was on a purse. I wanted the inside pockets to be at the back toward my body, and the zipper opening from front to back. Half way through applying the zipper, I realized I was doing it backwards. Ripped it out and reinserted it. I was so happy it came out great! Then I wanted to hand bead the front only, as beads in back would only rub off. After hours of hand beading, I was done! Grrr...I beaded the wrong side! I'm living with it!!

Glad your dress is coming along fine. I have to make the veil before I start the actual dress as the bride needs it to play with hairstyles.

Keep sewing!
