Is there any specific fabric I should use when I design my own punch needle embroidery? |

The instructions that came with my punch needles said to use any tightly woven fabric, including but not limited to muslin. It looks like there are many many creative opportunities through tinkering with the fabric type, the thread type, and the length of the loops you make. I did a little bit of experimenting with mine and really enjoyed it. I still haven't done a full project withit yet though. What are you working on?

Gosh...I can't believe that punch needle embroidery is starting to be popular. Back in 1988 I went to Florida for a golf vacation and went to a flea market where a woman was selling punch needle kits. I bought one and did a bunch of designs on sweatshirts for my nieces and nephews for their birthdays. I just used a lightweight stabilizer on the back of the sweatshirt where I was punching the designs. I also did some wall art on muslin and on peau du soie. They came out beautifully. Never saw any punch needle supplies in Canada until this spring. TTFN from

I was thinking about making a pattern of a crow for my mom. She likes crows and I couldn't find any pattern for one. |

Judy - I thought exactly the same thing when I saw the supplies at a craft display here in PG last fall. But I think I got my kit in the 70's. The seller tried to sell me a needle punch, but as I never throw anything out I still have my original. Today I got my copy of Keepsake Needlework catalogue and there they are again! I wonder what will come around again next. The peau de soie fabric sounds wonderful. I will have to try something on silk. I did buy a few little patterns from the seller I visited last fall. *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

I am looking for a source for the threads used in punch needle. Haven't seen any around for quite some time. Would like to take it up again , but my thread supply is very low ^..^ =^..^=

I use weavers cloth, which I found at Hobby Lobby. It isn't much more expensive than muslin & worth the difference. I didn't think to check at Joann's. You need a tightly woven cloth so that when it is taken out of the hoop, the weave tightens up to hold the threads in the project.

Juat catching up... The punch needle embroidery info I have indicates that you may use any kind of thread that you like. The kit I bought included DMC floss, like the kind used in cross-stitching. It also said that you can experiment with other types of fibers--silk, rayon, etc--but to pay attention to the thickness of the thread, since the needle shafts are made to accommodate specific numbers of strands.

JOAnn's sells the supplies for punch needling. It is making a comback it seems. Look for it in the needlepoint dept and the yarn dept.
