I am making a tunic-style dress for a Pakistani wedding from what appears to be lightweight rayon crepe. It ravels like a son of a gun! Thanks to Pam on the Bridal forum, I finally have the right needle and tension to sew the seams. Here's the question: I want a neat, clean, strong finish on the seams. I was thinking of French seams, but am wondering how to handle that at the armholes and especially at the slits on either side at the hem. I don't want too much bulk at the underarm seam and I want a nice finish for the slits. What would you all suggest? Blessings, Barbara |

You are probably going to want to bind the armholes with a silk organza, probably the slit too. I didn't have the slit on the sheer items I've made, but I did have the armholes, I did the french seams all around where I could, from there I bound the seams.

Thanks, Laura. I've done the bound armholes before and had come to that conclusion as I handled the fabric. But somehow I'm having trouble visualizing the slits. I keep seeing having to clip the fabric at the top and that worries me. But...aha...a moment of brilliance dawns as I type. I have encountered this before on 17th century men's shirts! A tiny gusset at the slit! And I can do the same silk organza because barely any of the slit-gusset shows on the outside of the garment! You never know what will spark the right thought. Thanks Again! Barbara |
