I am curious if anyone here has had their computer die with all their embroidery stuff on it. If so what did you have to do about all those things that are restricted to use on one computer only? Did the companies give you grief or were they pretty cool about it?
I am pretty annoyed with this whole computer thing, I want to chuck it all out the window right now. I spent twenty minutes on chat with tech support only to find out that they couldn't help me and I had to go fill out all the info again somewhere else on the site. :whacky:

All my software I just reinstalled there was no grief. All my embroidery designs I got them off the hard drive by taking it to the computer store and they transferred all my docs and embroidery designs to an external hard drive. they can do it to CDs or DVDs if you want for a nominal fee.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Gina,
I never had that happen due to sewing, but I am on a lot of tag and art groups. Once you collect a lot of tags, tutes, art and the rest that goes with it, the old computer starts to slow down. For some people it just stopped. I always transfered my stuff to CD's so it wasn't on my hard drive for a long time. I have lots of CD's. Can you transfer your designs to CD's or floppies, make sure they are on them then delete them on there hard drive? Maybe it is just overloaded with graphics and stuff?

Well one computer basically means one owner, so have never been given grief when I've changed computers. Which I have now done 3 times, first DH took mine, so got me a new one, then the kids needed a new one, so DH gave them mine, and got me another new one :bluewink: follow the trend. There is a couple of ways to get the data, or files off the hard drive, as long as the hard drive isn't what failed. But what we have done several times is DH just puts that hard drive in my new computer as my secondary hard drive, then I have a second drive, all my files are still there. Mind you with this engineer DH I've learned all my programs are on the C drive or my main drive, all my saved files, like the embroidery designs are on the secondary drive. Alas though I now also have a removable storage drive that I back up and/or store files on to - why so I can move my files with me to my laptop or anywhere I want or if DH decides to switch computers around again! If you don't know how to remove the hard drive & put it into the second slot on the new computer then take it to a store, either have them pull the data & transfer it for you and/or have them put the drive from the old computer into the computer for you as a seconary drive.

Gina, I haven't had that problem in a long time since most programs I use today require a dongle instead of limiting use to one computer like they use to. When I did have it happen it seems like the computer repair shop was able to pull all those programs out and put them on floppy (back then) for me. I don't know why yours has "crashed", but others have already pointed out some reasons that have caused me problems that turned out to be correctable. Another problem I have encounterd and actually replaced computers over before I learned better was "spyware". You can get loaded up with various spyware until the computer gets so slow that it will actually quit working.

Tom had a point, you didn't say why you thought your computer was toast? I run spyware on my computer, the laptop, the kiddos, etc. We have helped so many people around where we live that thought their computer was toast only to find out that 1) they were loaded with spyware or 2) they had a virus. If it was spyware we used Microsoft's Spyware program (which is free, and ranks pretty well with most sites). Even after that we will run Adware by Lavasoft, which is another spyware removal program. We have just found that occasionally one will miss the other will catch. The Lavasoft Adware is a free ware too. After that if it is a virus then they have to buy an Anti Virus program. Sometimes we can clean the virus once we install & scan. If we can't then we have to do a complete hard drive re-format. I was amazed though recently we bought a new Dell - we found that Dell wasn't sending the software CD's anymore (like Windows XP!) because they said it was already pre-loaded for you! When I explained 1) I own the software with the computer 2) we occasionally like to re-format our harddrives to clean up - so I need to be able to re-install the operating system, drivers, etc. They explained that most people never use their original CD's so they quit sending them unless you request them. They did send them with my request, I had to check though because the 1st time they sent the wrong ones. But moral to the story here - is it really toast? Is there a part that can be replaced? We also have replaced the graphics cards, etc .. as long as the repair doesn't out weigh the cost of replacement.

Well here was the toast. My laptop (where I keep all my sewing embroidery stuff) would not turn on. Nothing, Nada, Kaput! My husband spent the evening searching the net for possible fixes. Turns out if you turn the computer over and give it a swat in the right spot it will behave. Haven't had a problem since. Imagine that! Looks to be an issue with my processor. So hubby copied my hard drive to his computer and now the laptop will go to the doctor. I am not to keen on temporary fixes that require me to strike a $1000 piece of equipment.
Thanks for all the suggestions. My hubby is a computer programmer. He knows about all the lastest spyware/virus stuff so I don't ever worry about that.
My only real worry was if the companies would give me grief about loading the stuff onto another computer while my laptop is in the shop or when I get a new computer. Depending on what it costs to fix I may just get a new computer.

I'm glad you got it working.
I love your embroidery esp. the bowling stuff. My kids are really into bowling & if I ever get enough money to buy an Emb. machine I know I will be doing a lot of those designs.

Gina, I don't know what other software you have but any of your Pfaff software
as well as Ce-100 software is "key" protected so you can install it on as many computers as you like. It just won't work unless the dongle or machine is attached. I remember I used to have some programs that had to be uninstalled before they could be reinstalled in another computer but that was so long ago I doubt I even have those programs loaded any more. I honestly can't think of a sewing machine program today that is a single or limited number load.
Glad you got your computer up. Hopefully this will all be a mute issue.

Thought I would let you know that hubby and I fixed my computer all by ourselves. Turns out it was over heating. We found a website that shows step by step how to take apart my craptop. So we opened it up and there is this place where there should be some goo between the processor and the heat spreader and all the goo was gone. We squirted some goo in there and WOW no more problems. Now if I could just get my Futura software to stop locking up I might get some embroidery done. :whacky:
